CHAPTER TWO

When we got home I was grilled by Levi with questions as to who Shawn was, and why he didn't kiss me goodbye. I realized at that moment I've watched too many romance movies with this little guy. 

I gave him some medicine and gave him a bit of soup before checking my phone to see I had a couple of messages. One from Nick, Levi's dad and my ex who's doing training for the military and is two hours away from us on base right now. The other texts were from Shawn;

Shawn M: Hey Eliza, thanks for giving me your number. Levi's a cute kid.

Shawn M: Um, I was wondering if you and he wanted to go on a hike this weekend? I know a place, it's beautiful in the fall. I could bring my niece so he has a friend? Let me know how he's doing and what you think.

Shawn M: Ps, I know you may think this is rushed, but I've been watching you for the past few weeks and thought you were really cute from afar. I think that may be why I started off as a real dick this morning.

His texts threw me for a loop and my heart jumped at all the new information. Levi watched my reaction with curiosity and I tucked my phone into my jean pocket mentally reminding myself to respond later.

Once Levi finished up his soup we went into my room and cuddled up on the bed turning on the TV. We turned on Hotel Transylvania, one of Levi's favourites and I held him close as he fell asleep in my arms. I managed to pull my phone out and reread the texts smiling to myself, before replying;

Me: Hey Shawn, he is cute eh? I think we would love that, and I'm sure Levi would love to meet your niece as would I. Funny actually I was certain Levi was a girl and that they were wrong when they told me the gender. And thank you, you weren't too bad... I'm just not a huge pet name fan. Levi's dad loves pet names, and I just can't stand there being a different one in every sentence, so I may have also been a little hostile plus I'd already fought with a three year old this morning.

Me: Oh, and I also think you're really cute...😉

My cheeks are hot, just from flirting through text and I can't imagine how I'd be reacting if this were in person. Gosh Shawn is a future NHL player and he likes me, a single mom of a three year old. 

A nineteen year old single mom at that. 

I can't imagine what his family will think, I mean he mentioned his brother had kids but he also said he was in the NFL and married so I'm sure he's a bit older than us, and his kids are similar in age to Levi so that doesn't make me feel much better. I'm so distracted by my own thoughts I don't notice when a new message pops up from Shawn.

Shawn M: Oh Eliza, I'm blushing... haha for real though. I also have a game Friday night and I don't know if you know this but I'm kind of good so if you want to come... I'd be willing to skate better if I know you're there.

Shawn M: You can even leave Levi with a sitter and we could hang out later if you want...

My breathing hitches at his offer and I inwardly groan, and this is why I stopped talking to boys. His suggestion to leave Levi at home upsets me, probably more than it should and I put my phone down and flick over to start watching where I left off on Grey's Anatomy. I'm two episodes further when my phone vibrates again and I try to reach over to grab it without waking Levi.

Shawn M: Okay... Maybe that wasn't the best thing to say? I'm sorry Eliza, I am really trying here.

I clicked off of Shawn's message and went back to see if Nick had ever gotten back to me on having Levi this weekend. I hadn't told Shawn, but Levi was supposed to go to Nick's parents this weekend and Nick would be in early Saturday morning to spend time with him until Sunday.
