"Where have you been? " The look on my father's face was not one that I had seen before. Normally he was easy to read as his emotions generally just consisted of anger or the drunk-dazed look that he usually has on his face after he's been out drinking all night. Today his face expressed a more concerned surprise of my arrival. He took a step back and put down the phone in his hand.

"I was collecting water, why are you back so early shouldn't you be at work? " Placing the water buckets, I take a step through the doorway, and as if we were practising a dance, my father takes a step back once again.

"Working on the field by the River today and there was a... Issue and I had to come home early. "

An issue? Days here were consistent and nothing interesting ever happened. News consisted of marriage or a baby on the way. What sort of issue would have interfered with his work to the point he'd have to come home? For my father and his colleagues to miss work... Well, it was just unheard of. Even when my father had been injured due to a piece of machinery crushing 2 of his fingers on his left hand, he'd still gone to work the next day, if only to pay for the steep medical bills.

Not only that but why had he quickly put down the phone when I arrived? Something is happening and it seems to be more than an injured colleague or broken machinery.

My father, seemingly sensing the questions arising in my face, picked up his phone and made a move to the door.

"I need to go, I'll be back later, continue with your jobs as usual." Pushing past me, and starting to pace towards the bike, I begin to ask if anyone has been injured and offer to help patch them up.

"Stop asking questions, know your place Kiylana." And with that, he swung a leg over the rusting bike and pedalled down the road. Left once again to myself, I continue to do as I was told and sweep out the constantly dusty inside of the glorified shed of a house.
