The First Time They Met
DahliaDahlia watched as the captain-less boat propelled itself across the black rippling lake, the gorgeous castle rising above the water, dark but inviting. From what Dahlia could see in the dimly lit atmosphere, the others were gazing up at the castle in much the same way she was. The moonlight shimmering on the water's surface.
All of a sudden, that alluring scene disappeared, swarming their view in a wave of ivy. A tunnel, lit only by a handful of torches, dragged out their distinguable vision. It stretched onward, seemingly taking them under Hogwarts.
When they reached a sort of harbor, the students found themselves stuck to their seats, questioning the next move. The large man that led them there disembarked from his boat and turned to everybody, his face was just visible from behind his untamed beard. Everyone took the broad man's alight as a hint, and began to climb out of the boats onto the uneven, pebbly ground.
"Everyone in?" He shouted in a joyful tone, contrasting his intimidating demeanor.
With no verbal indication, the burly man started to turn toward the staircase but stopped mid turn and looked toward the direction of the inky water.
"Oy, you there! Is that your toad?" The man asked, motioning toward a brown hair, round faced boy.
"Trevor!" The boy shouted, relieved, lunging toward the toad.
"Best yuh watch Trevor there a bit more closely." The man muttered to the boy, smiling.
The giant then turns completely, ushering everyone up the steep staircase. Once they reach the tall oak doors that lead into the castle, the man opens them, stepping to the side of the narrow platform to hold the door. Everyone stumbles into the warmly lit corridor, massive marble stairs ascended to their right. The leaders of the feeble group of kids hesitantly travel up the stairs first. When they arrive at the top, a stern looking witch with emerald green robes awaits them, her brown hair in a tight bun. Her expression was cold, looking almost disapprovingly at them before even knowing their names.
"The firs' years, Professor McGonagall." the large man said.
"Thank you Hagrid. I will take them from here." She said wistfully.
Hagrid walked off behind her and opened the two huge doors. A booming sound of excited voices escaped from the hall and echoed down the stairs. Many of the children tried to see inside, shuffling on the steps to get a better view. Their curiosity overcoming their attentiveness. Until Hagrid shut them again, leading their attention back to Professor McGonagall.
"In a moment you will all be sorted into your houses, there are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin," she said, her stern voice lightening faintly. "Now while you're here your house will be like your family, once you are sorted into your correct house you will take a seat at your house table." She finished, her eyes darting around the group of nervous eleven year olds. A smile so brief flashed across her face, if you blinked you may have missed it.
She turned on her heels toward the towering oak door Hagrid just walked through. The sound once again erupted from the hall as she opened them. It was lit beautifully by floating candles that hover above your head. The ceiling, instead of exhibiting stone like the rest of the castle, showed a misty display of the night sky. The hall quieted as the group walked through toward a lengthy table at the front. They walked between two of the four long tables that almost spread the length of the room.
A stool stood alone just in front of the table at the front of the hall. On top of the stool sat a weathered old witches hat and a scroll of parchment. Professor McGonagall stopped the students just before the stool, taking the scroll and unraveling it a little before speaking
