The day of the lunch came and Sherlock had been pacing around the room since 6 am in the morning. John tried to make him calm down but when it didn't work he gave up and made them tea.
They showed up in front of Susan's apartment at exactly 11:55. Sherlock knocked on the door while John held a simple bouquet they picked up on their way there.
Susan greeted them warmly and invited them in. She took the boquet and placed it into a vase. The moment she turned around Sherlock faced her.
"I know about them."
Her smile wavered and she looked down.
"Of course you do. I knew you would find out. I am sorry I couldn't bring myself to tell you. Remembering brings pain and I have been running away from it for very long time." She lifts her gaze. There are tears glistening in her eyes.
"I don't think that I can handle it now."
John faded into the backround watching the interaction. Sherlock in the meanwhile stepped closer and grabbed Susan by her shoulders. Then he did something John never thought he would see Sherlock do. He gave her a hug. Susan melted into his embrace and sobbed.
"I miss them Sherlock. I miss them so much. I miss the way Peter and I would bicker over strange latin words and how he would make me laugh every time I felt down.
I miss how Edmund used to read everywhere and how Lucy made flower crowns for me.
I miss the games of hide and seek.
I miss my parents so, so much.
I miss them all so much that when I remember that I can no longer talk, laugh or meet them my heart feels like it will break and my chest tightens so much I can't breathe."
Susan let her feelings take over her mind. She let the pain she had been evading in and she could only do so because she met her childhood friend. Sherlock felt the same even though he didn't express it. She knew it and that was why she was now weeping into his chest desperate to finally talk to somebody who gets how she felt. But what happenned next surprised her. Sherlock started talking.
"I miss Peter's and mine conversations upon rules and laws. I miss his kindness. I miss Edmund and our talks about books that could take hours. I miss his cleverness. I miss Lucy and the way her smile never failed to make my day brighter. I miss her niceness."
Susan pulled backwards. Sherlock cups her face with his hands.
"Do you remember that time Edmund and Lucy set a prank on Peter by putting all the mugs outside on the lawn before their dorms and then proceeded to barge into Peter's room and tell him that it sure looked muggy outside? And how he nearly choked on his coffee when he looked out of the window?"
Susan nodded. And a small smile made way to her face.
"Do you remember that time Edmund learned five new languages just so he could swear around Lucy?"
Sherlock's quiet laugh circled the room.
"And that one time you and Edmund bet that he couldn't stuff fifteen turkish delights into his mouth and when Lucy found out she convinced him to do twenty?"
Soon enough the room was filled with
"Do you remember?... And that one time... And when..."
This and that and that thing and also that...
All the little things they remembered.
Because remembering hurts but it can be a beautiful kind of pain.
John let them have their moment and wandered off to explore the apartment more. He was just listing through some magazine when he smelled a faint smell of smoke. He peeked back into the room in which the two old friends were laughing and carefully cleared his throat.
"Not to interupt or anything but don't you smell something burning?"
Susans eyes widdened and she sprinted back to the kitchen to save whatever was left from the burning food.
"How is it going?" John muttered to Sherlock.
"It's good." Replied Sherlock with a smile.
Susan came back into the room and beckoned them to follow her into the dining room.
"I am sorry but the pie is a little bit burned." She apologized and only after they assured her that it's alright she went to fetch them the other food.
She served chicken soup, pasta with tomato sauce and finally, truly a little burned, but still delicious apple pie.
Susan and Sherlock told John stories of when they were in school and laughed together while enjoying their food.
John learned how they heard Lucy swear for the first time and how Sherlock promised to stop Edmund from getting punched but only after several tries.
How Lucy doodled on their arms with a sharpie and how she was the wonder of art class and how Peter was not to be spoken to until he had his morning coffee.
How Susan had to pull them out of trouble by pretending to be very angry and promising teachers to scold them properly only to laugh breathless once they told her what they did.
How they played games with code names and how Peter was the Magnificent, Susan the Gentle, Edmund the Just, Lucy the Valiant and how Sherlock was the Detective.
Pevensies were truly important to Sherlock and John understood why. They accepted him as a person, laughed at his snarky comments and didn't question his intelligence. That was one of the rules if you ever wanted to get Sherlock to talk to you in a friendly way.
After they finished eating and got ready to leave, Susan promised to be at the train station tomorrow to see them out. She also presented Sherlock with a present. A small picture of five children smiling together in school uniforms. When they left it was already getting dark.
