I honestly couldn't complain about my life. I lived in a cute studio apartment five minutes away from my job bartending. I was 5'9" slender framed, with wide hips and a big bust and I had recently colored my hair dark black with a blonde money piece. I had also started wearing brown eye contacts because people stared too long at my normal sea green eyes, and I had my left nostril pierced. I'd recently made a tattoo appointment, but I wouldn't be going for another couple of weeks. Work attire was a black tank top, dark black jeans, a red belt, and some stellar black kick boots with a 2 inch platform. The prettier you are the more likely men will tip you.
Tonight the bar was in full swing and I was having a blast making drinks. My partner in crime for the night Ellis was a 6'4" scrawny beautifully melanated goddess of a man. He wore more eyeliner and glitter than me, but don't let that fool you. He'll go toe to toe with anyone who stepped out of line.
"Ellis, you wanna start handing out drinks or are you gonna keep flirting with that poor helpless man?" I shouted over at him, giving him a wink. Ellis handed the man a beer and looked over at me with a full smile on his face.
"Honey, I can multitask. You ever met a gay man who couldn't?" Everyone around him laughed at my expense and then waited for him to take their orders. I snorted and looked at the lady in front of me.
"What can I get you honey?" I ask her. She looks like the normal newly twenty one year old's that walk into a bar. Nervous and no idea what to order.
"Can I have a sex on the beach?" She blushes as she asks and I try my best not to give her a wicked smile and goad her into a higher blush. It's just the way we act with newbies.
"Sure honey I get off at 2. I'll meet you on the pier." I shouted at her. At first she looks confused, but then she registers what I say and starts to blush even more red than before. I look at Ellis who's hollering with laughter at the girls expense. I quickly finish up her drink and hand it to her.
"On the house baby. Happy birthday!" I shout over the music and she smiles before leaving. Ellis and I give each other a look and get back to serving the alcohol. It was pretty steady until midnight and then it started to really pick up by one. Honestly, I got lost in making the drinks and flirting my way through bigger tips and forgot time existed until Ellis came and bumped me in the side.
"Aren't you supposed to be off?" Ellis yells at me. I look over at the time and then notice Kelly clocking in as well. Was it two already?
"Guess so." I smirk and hand the last guy I'm serving his drink. I close his tab out too and then Kelly is there picking up my side of the bar.
"Have a good night!" I shouted at Kelly and quickly gave Ellis a kiss on the cheek.
"Honey you're not my type, but I'll make an exception if you take the trash with you." Ellis shouts and I laugh, waving my hand. It's a signal that I'll do it even if I don't want to. I closed the back up, trash bag in hand and threw it into the trash can outside.
"Hello?" Someone shouts and I turn to see a tall man standing at the end of the alley. That's never a good sign.
"What?" I answered back. Why did I answer back? I don't actually know...
"Can you help me get in?" Something about his voice just... It makes me wary. I don't know why but I didn't like the sound of it.
"I'm heading home. You should too." I tell him. He smirks and starts to walk towards me. I was trying to shoulder past him, but he wasn't really in the moving type of mood.
"Pretty woman inviting me over already? At least learn my name first." His eyes were taking in my form and I definitely wasn't happy about it.
"No one was inviting you anywhere. Get out of my way." I rolled my eyes, but put my hand in my back pocket. I had a switchblade back there and I wasn't afraid to use it.
"Oh come now. You don't have to hide it." Huh? That's an awkward thing to say.
"She said to leave." Of course, there's another man in the corner. Are you kidding me?
"Dude I already got her. You can leave." The boy in front of me is still staring down at me and I take this moment to punch him in the face.
"No one's got me." Who did he think he was? What a ridiculous notion. The man behind him chuckles and I look over at him. He's tall and broad shouldered, and his hair goes to his shoulders. I can't make out anything else from this angle.
"I can see that." His voice intrigues me, like I know him. How is that possible?
"Who are you?" I ask him. He moves a couple inches forward and stands in the light.
"I'm looking for a Monica Foster. Does she still own this bar?" His words vaguely make sense to me. I'm more into staring at him. His hair was blonde and wavy and he had a beard to match it. His brown eyes were set in a stern way and he wasn't really staring at me. He was in armor that I remembered vaguely but on a slighter form, not so muscular.
"Did you not hear me girl?" He says and I'm quickly pulled back from whatever rabbit hole I was falling down.
"What?" I ask him, coming right back down to being annoyed.
"Do you know if Monica still owns the bar?" His voice had grown impatient and it made me curious. What did he want with the owner of the bar? Why did I suddenly want to know the nature of their relationship?
"Who's she to you?" I ask him. He chuckles and then looks longingly away.
"A dear friend I'm trying to reconnect with." My heart dropped as he said that. Of course the most good looking man I'd ever seen would know the sluttiest girl in town. I shouldn't have doubted that.
"And you are?" I drew the question out. I knew who he was but I wasn't going to let him know.
"My name's Thor and yours?" He was relaxing, like we were two normal people having a normal conversation in the early portions of morning right in front of an alley.
"Esmerelda." I answer him and he gives me a weird look before he shakes it off.
"Pleasure to meet you. Now will you answer my question?" Thor raises an eyebrow at me.
"Yeah she still owns the bar." I sigh, getting tired of this weird tango happening. I make to move around him, but I hear a noise in the back of the alley. My hair stands up on my spine as somethings hums.
"Esmerelda, do me a favor and don't move." Thor's chest was incredibly close to my face right now and I couldn't not inhale his scent. Clean laundry and musk.
I shook my head in annoyance and turned slightly to see behind me. Complete darkness greeted me for a moment until my eyes began to focus and I could see something slithering towards me. Like a snake but with a body of a human.
"What the hell is that thing?" I gasped softly, trying not to draw attention to us. I didn't need him crawling towards me. He wasn't focused on anything just yet and I was grateful for that, until I heard a noise come from out of his throat.
"Hungry.." It's voice was raspy and slow. My heart sank the closer it crept and then I heard a clicking noise. The top portion of it rolled around and towards us, as if it could sense my harsh breathing.
"Stay still." Thor whispered down at me and that caught the things attention. The clicking stopped and a soft wet slithering sound started. Sounding awfully close to me. I tried to stand still, control my breathing, and pretend like this wasn't happening.
"No no no no no no..." I whispered in my head. At least I hoped I was saying it in my head so that thing didn't come slithering at me. One of Thor's arms wrapped around my shoulders and I tensed, not sure what he was doing.
"Mine..." I heard the thing say behind us and then suddenly the air was changing around us, charged. I closed my eyes to the blinding white light and moved my head into his shoulder. What the hell was going on?
