Although Reina's gaze was fixed at the window, it took her a while to realize that the sun had already set, and it was dark, both in her room and outside. She looked around for her phone to check the time. It was the first time she had moved since getting home from school. For the whole afternoon, she just sat curled up on her bed, looking mindlessly outside. It was strange. When she was at school, she thought she would burst out crying as soon as she was alone. But it didn't happen. Not yet. She finally did it. She told Kageyama how she felt about him. Probably in the worst moment possible. She dreaded his response. But because she didn't have any, she could just wait in limbo.
When she found her phone, instead of noting what time it was, she was staring at her lock-down picture. It was a couple photo. A peculiar one because Kageyama had a sinister smile on his face and, as Tsukishima said, looked as if he had kidnapped her. It usually made her smile, but now, when she thought back to the circumstances in which she took it, she couldn't laugh. Over the last few days, her elated attitude toward being Kageyama's girlfriend disappeared, and she analyzed their relationship with much colder reason. The resolve that she wanted to be with him didn't waver one bit. It didn't matter anymore that she would have to let go of many things "a couple should do" Who cares? It had to be him or no one. She liked that idiot more than any other guy she had ever met. If it wasn't with him, she didn't care for dating at all.
But she realized she had no reason to believe it was the same for Tobio. Yes, he did kiss her a few times, but as Eri always cautioned her, a boy could kiss a girl without any special feelings involved. Their everyday reality was so mundane that she sometimes couldn't believe if those magical moments happened or if it was just in her head. She had high hopes for the last few weeks, as it was off-season, and they could spend more time together, but studying was all they did, and Tobio acted as if he was there against his will. He wasn't happy to hang out with her at all.
Even now, after she gathered her courage and said what she felt for him, he probably just went to volleyball practice as usual. And she was stuck here, waiting.
The phone vibrated in her hand. She checked it to see a message from Kageyama.
"Can you come out for a bit? I'm in front of your house."
She stood up. Suddenly, her body released all pent-up emotions. Her heart started beating fast, and her hands shaking. Lightheaded, she went downstairs and outside.
She almost turned back when she saw his face. She had seen that intimidating expression on him many times before and usually made fun of it. But he never looked with such intensity and anger at her.
"Hi..." she approached him anxiously.
"Let's go." He said, turned around, and started to briskly walk away. She followed.
In a few minutes, they've reached the park, where they hung out once before.
"Troublesome!" he said, suddenly turning around. Reina stopped, startled.
"Relationships! Dating! And all those stupid little things 'you're supposed to do as a couple'. Figuring out what's on your mind. It's all just... troublesome!" he kept going on, almost shouting. "I never bothered with that, and now you made me! Do you know I couldn't play at all today?! ME! Volleyball is the only thing I ever cared about, the only thing I'm good at. And it sucked today. I couldn't hit one serve well!"
This was harsh. She didn't expect such a response, but it only confirmed her fears. As long as she was only helping him study and talking with him about volleyball, it was all fine. But when having a girlfriend interfered somehow with his practice, he wouldn't have it.
"So this is it... you had enough," she said. All the tears she couldn't let out before gathered in her eyes. She didn't want him to see. She turned away. "All this time, I tried my best. Even though I knew you were not feeling the same about me. And that volleyball would always be more... the most important for you. I still hoped... that there was a reason why you wanted to be my boyfriend. But if I'm just a bother to you... I guess this is the end." Now, she just didn't want to fall apart in front of him. She started to walk away.
Tobio swiftly overtook her and locked her in his arms.
"Stupid... Didn't you hear me before?" he said. "I couldn't play volleyball because of you... It scares me, but doesn't that mean you're just as important?!"
"What do you mean?" she asked. Tobio wrapped his arms around her even more, even though she didn't try to run away now. So warm, so strong.
"I mean... I hate it when I don't understand what is going on. And apparently, I'm bad at it, so you need to tell me straight. You know... As they say... communication is key. Or something like that. So you need to tell me straight when I'm supposed to do something. All that couple stuff," he explained.
"Why, though? I didn't think you cared."
"Because I like to see you smile."
"Why?"
"Because I like you, dammit! Like a lot!" Tobio shouted and turned red.
Reina looked up at him. He was cute when he was flustered. She couldn't admire his face anymore because he was kissing her already. Suddenly, he stopped.
"And we're definitely going on that date. I'm sick of studying, but it doesn't mean I don't want to do other things with you," he said.
"Mhm," she said quietly, with her face buried in his chest.
"Although... we will have to wait till after the spring break. Sorry... Come to think of it, I'm a pretty crappy boyfriend, aren't I?"
"Mhm, hm hm, hi hi hi," she giggled.
"How come you're so happy now?" he asked.
"It's the first time you said you like me."
"Seriously? I guess... Wait... Didn't I admit to liking you that day I asked you to be my girlfriend?"
"Wow, you have a good memory, but you only said something like 'I like you the same as before' then. Whatever that meant."
"It meant that I liked you before!"
"It was so vague that I would never say you meant that."
"Well, I admit I do like you more now... Still, you only confessed to me today, so I was first!" he said, weirdly pleased with himself.
"Hmm, actually, I did say aloud a few times before that I like you. Not my fault that you were asleep then."
"But was it before or after we started to date?"
"After, I guess."
"So still... I win."
"Wow, you get competitive about the weirdest things, don't you?" She started chuckling.
Tobio shut her up with a kiss.
