After a night of slow drinking and getting a great deal of weed burned, I was cuddling into Aaron's firm chest playing with a seam on his jeans. We were sitting on my couch listening to some records playing on my generations-past Victrola.
Aaron took a long drag from the blunt we were sharing breaths with. His head fell back into my couch while he slowly lowered the blunt to my fingertips.
I took one last inhale from the roach and I ashed it out in a small cup of water sitting on the floor.
Aaron took one look at me and smiled. Analyzing the small amount of space in between our faces.
He smirked and turned away to look for his beer. He gulped it down and asked "what do you think about fate?"
"What do you mean?" I say while swigging mine as a final inch of liquid swooshes the bottom of the bottle.
"Like, do you believe things are all part of some master plan or do you believe that things just happen for no reason?" He stared into my eyes, looking for my answer.
"I'm not sure. I think it's kind of a mixture of both. I think the universe handles everything. That's the only higher power I believe in." I say with a small shrug and I lightly roll my empty bottle across the floor to a small pile of bottles.
"What about you?" I ask.
"I think everything happens for a reason. I think it was fate that led me to you." He says while glancing up from the rim of his bottle to my eyes.
"Do you really think that? Well you don't even know anything about me." I say, a smile breaking from my lips. I bite my bottom lip and look down toward my hands.
"No. But I want to know things about you." He gets up from the floor, and begins to put on his coat. "I hope we can do this again soon. Maybe I can actually drink next time and stay a little longer." He shrugs his sleeves over his shoulders and throws his hood over his forehead.
"Y-yes! Yes, we should definitely do this again." I say, trying to keep my cool, but my drunk mouth is stumbling.
He smiles and walks up to me, kisses my forehead and closes my apartment door.
I slump back into my couch and close my eyes to the sound of "Baby It's Cold Outside".
-----------------
I woke up to the sun shining through my blinds. It must be early, this time of year means it should be pouring rain by noon.
I raised a heavy head over to the corner of my empty living room and saw a few bottles of Stella Artois laying on their slender sides. I remembered cuddling up to Aaron and sort of regretting not kissing him.
He did say he wanted to hang out again, soon....is it too soon to text him?
I got up to pee and realized that I forgot to buy more toilet paper. 'That's' what I went to the store to get last night before I was hypnotized by Aaron and his Absolem shroud.
I sighed and reached for a box of tissues that resided adjacent to my faucet. I washed my hands leisurely, getting every germ and speck of dirt. Upon drying my hands on my hand towel that I'm happy I remembered to place there, my head shot up at my reflection realizing that I had no idea what time it was.
I scheduled a counseling appointment for 9 am at University of Washington to enroll.
I sprinted to my room where my only clock rested on my wall.
"It's 8:50, you'd better hurry!" My clock screamed at me.
It's going to take at LEAST 10-15 minutes to get there if I leave right now. There's no way I'm going to make it on time.
I rushed anyway, hoping they would show mercy. I threw on a pair of slacks, flats and a sheer blouse with little white anchors sprinkled over the navy blue shirt, making sure to slip on a tank top underneath.
I'm still tucking my shirt in my pants as I hustle out the door. I hunch into my car and practically yell at Siri to take me to the campus.
-----------------
A huff escaped my lips as I drooped into the cushioned seat of the counseling area.
"Didn't make an appointment?" A small framed girl that I didn't even realize was sitting in the chair next to me spoke up. She had a thin lipped smile that was painted with a faint layer of tinted gloss or Chapstick.
"I did. Just didn't show up in time, so now I'm just a walk-in." I said, raising and lowering my hands in a defeated motion.
She positioned her body to face me and propped her elbow up on the chair to hold her head in her hand.
"Yeah this place is borderline DMV when you don't make an appointment. Death by boredom." She giggled a little and I did too, feeling a vapor of stress dissipate.
"My name is Ellie. What's yours?" She held out a small slender hand.
I took it and smiled at her, muttering "Saya." Through tired lips.
We talked about a lot of different things in that half hour I ended up waiting. Somehow I got in before she did. I guess the appointment benefitted me some after all.
After discussing with a counselor my plans for college, he projected that I was more than qualified to be a student here. I felt a flush in my stomach of butterflies. I only had one more year of college and I was more than ecstatic to be spending it at such a prestige university.
The counselor shook my hand and handed me a paper detailing my steps for applying to the school and also slipped me a business card, complete with his name(Mr. Davis), phone and fax numbers, email, and department.
As I was getting my things together to leave, I got a good look at him and I noticed his too smooth blonde hair pushed over into a wave, as well as his bright blue eyes that rested inside hooded (exhausted?) eyelids, and a strong jawline that sheltered his apricot skin.
I rose from my seat and just before I walked out of the door, Mr. Davis shook my hand once more and gave me an expensive smile.
"Glad to have you here, Saya. Welcome to the Husky family." He said.
I thanked him again and I left the building with confident strides, waving at Ellie on the way out. We exchanged numbers prior to Mr. Davis beckoning me. After a week of living in this city, I've finally made a friend.
The word "friend" echoing in my head turned into "Aaron". And I quickly sent him a text after I sat before my steering wheel.
