This is a work of fiction.

The characters, the storyline, the setting—I made it all up. But I want to make it absolutely clear that the phenomena mentioned in this story aren't fictional. Things like stairways that lead to nowhere in the middle of the woods and wrong figures with no faces and unexplainable sounds that seem to come from everywhere at once are all real, true experiences. People go missing without a trace and are never found. Children report being lured away and taken care of by "fuzzy men." There have been multiple accounts of encounters with "men with black eyes" from parks and conservation areas around the world. And it's pretty easy to veer into cryptid territory with this too—Mothman and Bigfoot and Goatman and the like.

I'd like to tell everyone who reads this to stay safe and be careful, but the truth is that in my research for this story, I've found that if the woods want to take you they will. The best advice I can give you is:

1. Stay on the path.

2. Don't go into the woods alone.

3. If you see or hear anything strange, don't interact with it.

And never climb the stairs in the woods.
