Dragon Instinct

Chapter 1

Winter was overjoyed as he walked through the halls, smiling as he thought about how Moon was with him now. When he gets there though, he wasn’t expecting to see her kissing his best friend, Qibli. Qibli backs away, looking at the nightwing in disgust. “ You're with Winter and you go to me?!” He snarls, only for the nightwing to swing her talons at him, catching on something cold instead of warm. When she looks up, her and the others take a step back in surprise. Infront of her was Winter, standing at full height. His tail snakes forward and wraps around her throat, the icy spikes on the end crushing her wind pipes and piercing her scales. While Icewings don’t have a poisonous barb like sandwings, they have spikes on the end. Their tails can do a lot of damage to the enemy, they can pierce the enemy in fatal spots. This fact, along with their frost breath and the sharp talons, puts everyone on edge. He can still strike many others, along with killing Moon. Qibli, although still startled, walks to Winter slowly. “ Winer? You can let her go now, she can’t hurt you…” Winter turns his head,  Winter lifts his body to his hind legs, using his front talons to look over the surprised sandwings body for injuries. Upon seeing a slight scratch from Moon’s talons, his tail tightens around her throat. She claws at his tail, begging for air. “ Winter!! Let her go, I’m fine!!” Qibli shouts, Winter looks at him again before sighing. Once on the ground, Moon runs down the hall. The other members of the winglet rush to the 2 and stare as Winter, still on his hind legs, checks them all over. Once satisfied with the results he goes back to all fours, he begins to walk to where they are supposed to meet with Tsunami. They follow behind him, surprising and confusing the other dragonets as they walk by. They were always so against following Winter and he always walked to class before them. Moon isn’t with them either so that raised red flags as well, wondering what the nightwing did. Only then did they notice the bleeding chest of the icewing, and the blood on his tail. The only thing stopping them from thinking he killed her is the fact that they saw her run away, and icewings never use their tail to kill unless they are protecting comrades from behind. When they get there Tsunami goes to say something only to see the blood the others saw when they were walking to the classroom, she steps back when Winter notices Moon. He stands on his hind legs again and checks her for injuries, she lets it happen knowing immediately that his instincts had kicked in. What did surprise her is that his mind was so clouded by the instincts that he thought she and the winglet were from his tribe. Qibli sighs at this, Icewing instincts are strong enough to make Winter like this until the moon cycle is over. Winter turns to them again, his instincts telling him that he had his back turned for too long and that he needs to watch all of them. So he moves Tsunami towards the group and checks them over again, Qibli smiles at this. Tsunami announces that they're going to the prey center so she can talk to Clay and Sunny, Winter trails behind them, his tail staying near Moonwatcher. When they get there he leads them over to Clay and Sunny, staying near Tsunami, refusing to go too far from the group. Tsunami smiles softly before explaining all she knows to the other 2, Sunny frowns knowing whatever Moon did was bad enough to force Winter’s mind to follow long forgotten instincts. When they walk closer to the group Winter pulls Tsunami and sits her next to Kinkajou, before turning to snarl at the other 2, deeming them a big enough threat that he stood on hind legs with his wings flared. Sunny steps back, knowing enough about instincts to know if she could be killed, Clay follows her lead. This calms him slightly, “ I’m afraid this is worse than we thought, Tsunami. You and your group have to stay with him at all times, you can’t stop him from doing anything. If you do, he might think you're a traitor to the odd tribe thing he has going on and kill you.” The cave falls quiet, listening to what she has to say. “ So I have to stay with him as well as the rest of the winglet, except for Moon, until this passes over?” Tsunami asks Sunny, “ Yes and No, because these instincts are long forgotten we don’t know much about them. However I know that they won’t leave completely until he dies, which means that when his mate dies he’ll want to as well. Because it’s stronger with icewings he thinks everyone is a threat, even me and Clay. Because of Clay's size he feels the need to do this,” Sunny gestures to Winter, who never moved, “ And because of Moon being a nightwing and him being clouded by instincts, he has no way to know if it’s really her. He’ll attack anyone who looks like her, in other words any nightwing he sees.” Sunny finishes her explanation.
