"Hey...My name is Jayy," he said with his hands folded in his lap. "I'm here because of a broken family." He looked over at her noticing she was holding on to the sleeves of her shirt tightly.
"I'm Dani and I don't know why I'm here," she replied quietly as she got up from her chair and walked slowly down the hallway.
That is when he woke up.
It was December. About a week ago Jayy's dad left his mother and him. It was 2014 and Jayy hated school. He could never find any good friends. He was in 10th grade and got picked on a lot mostly for how tall and skinny he was and how he dressed. He had longer dark hair and green eyes. He was a shy kid and didn't go out much.
After Jayy's dad left he slowly started to stop talking to people at school, to his mom, and to his family. He stopped going to school and spent most of his time alone in his room. He came out to wash up and do a few other things. He eventually stopped talking to his mom completely. His mother was a shorter woman in her mid to late 30s with long blonde hair. She was scared and didn't really understand what was going on. But she thought about it and Jayy was a teen and she knew how he was.
She would leave him food outside the door. One day she softly knocked on the door,
"Jayy...Hun are you okay?" She said with a soft soothing voice. But he just turned up the music until she eventually just left. Months passed and Jayy's mom found out she had cancer. She didn't want to tell him.
As she started to get worse, his dad would come over time to time. He didn't bother to even try talking to Jayy though. December. January. February. March. April. May. It was now 2015. One night Jayy decided to sneak out of his window. He wandered down the streets looking at the lights. He smiled enjoying himself realizing how long he had shut himself out of this.
He heard a voice in the distance
"They're pretty huh?" a girl softly said.
"Yea..they're beautiful," Jayy replied shyly.
The voice sounded familiar, so he turned around and frowned softly seeing a group of people he used to know. They were laughing at him. Jeremy, Skyler, Kristy, and Mitch. He remembered being close to Kristy. He used to have a crush on her, but then she started dating Skyler and they got her into drugs and underage drinking. Then the distance slowly grew between them.
"Hey, look it's Jayy. What are you wearing? Your mom's pants?" Mitch laughed and threw his empty bottle at him.
"Hey, come on guys. He can't take all this then go home to his dying mother," Kristy laughed a little.
Jayy looked at her confused and raised his voice a little, "My mother isn't dying.."
"Really? Hasn't anybody told you..? Your mom has cancer. You don't think your dad, who is my step dad, would tell us this?"
She scoffed a little and watched him. Jayy stared at her and mumbled to himself then turned around starting to run home. He walked in through the front door and saw his dad and mom sitting in the living room. He stared at his dad, then at his mom.
"Why didn't you tell me? And you...Why are you here?" Jayy said raising his voice a little as his mom gasped remembering what Jayys voice sounded like after so many months of not even hearing him.
"Where have you been? How did you get out?" his mom asked looking at him concerned. "We have been so worried about you."
"We?" Jayy asked glaring at them. "He's with somebody else."
His mother looked at his father.
"Is this true, Jake?" she asked quietly.
He looked at her and softly shook his head, "Loretta.. I'm married and have two stepchildren. I'm sorry." He slowly got up and looked at her.
Jayy looked back and forth at both of them and ran up to his room. Listening to them go through a series of emotions.
That night after he left Jayy sat on his bed in silence. He softly started to sob to himself turning on music and pulling a box out from under his bed and slowly opening it. At this time his mom woke up screaming from a nightmare she felt like something was wrong but she shook it off after not being able to put her finger on it. Trying not to think about what must be going threw Jayy's head she rolled back over and tried to go back to sleep. The next morning she woke up and heard a the soft sound of music coming from his room and went down stairs to go make breakfast. She brought a plate up and sat it outside his door then cleaned up the house a little.
As she was sweeping she softly hummed to herself. Soon lunch time came and she made lunch and sat the plate outside his door but saw the plate of his breakfast there not touched.
"He must still be in bed." she quietly mumbled to herself
Picking up the breakfast plate and setting the one of lunch down knocking on the door softly and went back down stairs.
She finished cleaning and took a shower and just wandered around the house. She slowly walked into the kitchen making his favorite dish. She smiled pulling it out and started going up stairs to bring it to the door. But she stopped at the sight of the plate from lunch...untouched.. she slowly walked over to it and picked it up setting the plate of dinner down.
"Jayy...come on sweetie you need to eat," she knocked on the door. "I made your favorite..i made your favorite, homemade pizza."
She slowly walked away sighing from getting no reply or sign he was in there. She got ready for bed and went to sleep. The next morning she saw the plate there still. Scared and concerned she knocked on the door
"Jayy! get up! you need to eat!," she shouted pounding on the door now. "Jayy!"
She picked up the plate rushing down stairs grabbing the phone half crying she dialed 911.
"Hello?!," Loretta choked out trying to hold back tears. "i need help!"
"Yes? hello? Ma'am please stay calm tell us what is going on." a woman said on the other side of the line
"My son is in his room the door is locked and i can't get in. He hasnt eaten at all in the last 24 hours i just need to know hes okay!" Loretta said starting to cry now.
"Alright ma'am we will send help right away" the woman said before disconnecting.
Loretta sat outside on the step waiting for somebody, anybody to show up. She sobbed to herself and it felt like forever before anybody showed up. As soon as she saw a fire truck and two police cars she quickly stood up running across the yard to them.
"Please help me! I dont know whats going on with my son!" Loretta exclaimed crying.
The officer looked at her and replied, "take us to his room we will make sure to get in and check what's going on ma'am."
She quickly led them into the house.
"His room is the third room on the left second floor." She said leading them up to the door.
The officer knocked on the door, "hello? This is officer Mark, please open the door." Nothing happened.
"Son please open the door you're not in trouble." The officer repeated. But nothing happened. The officer pounded harder on the door then called up the back up officer. Together they broke down the door and slowly walked in telling Loretta to stay back for a second.
The officer gasped looking at jayy on the floor and called in the other officer.
"quick! Mike get me the phone! Give this boy CPR!" The officer screamed.
"Already on it sir!" He replies
Loretta stays in the hallway sobbing to herself as she slowly sits on the floor listening to the officers. Officer Mark calls the ambulance.
"Hello?! Its officer Mark! we need paramedics down here now on Pin Grove! Now!" The officer screamed. Loretta tried to see what was going on but by the time she was in the room she was getting shoved out of the way. She watched the paramedics pick Jayy up and get him on a stretcher and everything seemed in slow motion as she screamed and tried to push over to where he was. She ran after them as they took him away and she listened to the siren of the ambulance softly die out as they got farther and the officer came out and softly hugged her trying to calm her down.
"Hey..shh...listen its gonna be okay. But just listen to me i have to tell you," he softly shakes his head with tears in his eyes. "He tried to take his life..and if he doesn't make it.. i want you to still be proud of him. We may not know why, But i promise things will be okay. I have went threw the same thing. My daughter Dani...took her life at age 14." he says in a soothing voice now with tears streaming down his face hugging her. Loretta started crying even harder as she hugged the officer back.
It softly starts to rain and the officer leads her over to the car and opens the door and shuts it once shes in and walks over getting in and starting it pulling out of the driveway as it starts to rain harder. He turns on the siren and everything seems in slow motion again as Loretta watches the rain hit the windshield. They rush to the hospital and Loretta runs to the front desk sobbing as the nurse tells her what room and she runs down the halls to it. She knocks on the door and a doctor slowly opens it. She slowly walks in gasping looking at her son laying in the bed lifeless... she slowly walks in and kneels by the bed crying.
"Jayy..im so sorry..please forgive me! please wake up!" She sobs holding his hand tightly as the doctor comes over and softly rests his hand on her shoulder.
"I'm sorry...i will give you a minute." He says and slowly steps out of the room.
She softly kisses his head and slowly stands up walking out of the room and out of the hospital. She wanders down the streets and looks at all the lights then stops.
"I'm a proud mother.. i have a good, creative, sweet son.. rest easily Jayy." She said out loud smiling to herself and kept walking.
The day of the funeral came and Loretta looked up and saw Kristy by the coffin and smiled softly. Kristy ended up breaking up with Skyler and got sober. She helped Loretta out and had a garden with her over the summer.
And for Jayy? Well that day he started his new life... He slowly woke up sitting at a table. He knew exactly where he was. He looked up seeing a girl slowly pulling out a chair and he smiled softly at her.
"hey. My names Jayy." he said with his hands folded in his lap. "I'm here because of a broken family."
The girl smiled softly, "My names Dani." She took a seat and they started talking and became close friends finding out they were the same age and had a lot in common. They lived a good afterlife and Loretta did also living her life to the fullest visiting Jayy everyday.
