My heavy eyes scoured the pages scattered on my desk once more, though I didn't make anymore headway than the last seven times I read them. Request upon complaint. Maybe I wasn't cut out to be chief. I sighed, flopping my head into the inky paper. It was times like these when I looked back on the time I spent with the humans. Was I really expected to mindlessly murder such kind creatures? My family did. So I was expected to follow in their footsteps.
I hadn't slept in days, just trying to keep up with the clans demands. Word of a world famous vampire hunter in the area had spooked them. Since then I haven't gotten time to take care of myself much. They all demanded that I did something. Some wanted to kill them, others wanted to flee. Ultimately I couldn't make a decision. The hunters would only follow us if we fled. I also didn't want to kill when it was an unnecessary risk. I was relieved to hear that the hunters hadn't made a move. It was however concerning that in the near three months the hunters had been here that it seemed quiet. I heard a soft voice whisper in the distance.
"Michael, you can't fall asleep on your desk, you'll hurt your neck." I jerked my head up to see my old friend Lilith. Her long red hair was in a messy bun atop her head, with a few strands hanging out. Her lilac purple eyes had a harsh and caring look about them. "You look terrible, can you even walk straight?" She began. She put an arm around me and helped me up. "I told you to get more sleep to." She nagged. I couldn't help but smile. She made my days as chief, and long before, bearable. She walked me down the long hall of her home, I occasionally stumbled over my feet as I tried to drag them along. She pushed open the unlocked door to my room, walking me to my bed and letting me fall onto the soft blankets and pillows. Like a mother tucking her child into bed she gently tossed a blanket onto me and patted my head. "Goodnight Michael." She whispered before turning to head out. I didn't even see her walk out the door before I fell asleep.
I was rudely awakened by yelling and someone crashing through my door with Lilith behind him. "Chief! I'm sorry to bother you at this hour but it is an emergency!" He yelled. He was out of breath and looked as if he had been battling for a great while, he leaned against the wall to balance his seemingly injured leg. Hunters? I spared no time and hurried out of bed, throwing on my overcoat. "What happened?" I hastily yelped. "I told them not to! It was their idea Chief!" He cried. I grabbed his shoulders and steadied him. "I need to know what happened."
