"oh, why do you say so?" thomas tries, really tries, not to show his frustration in front of the glaring camera. the maze runner cast stare at him in pure sympathy but still manage to look ready to intervene in case the interviewer crosses the unspoken line.
the movie is definitely a huge success, if anything– not at all surprising, but that small, simple fact seems to slip from the interviewer's mind because she somehow ends up asking about their personal lives.
"she likes to disappear from time to time." thomas winces. it still stings even though he finally got used to it.
"oh. so, she's just a fling."
no, thomas wants to say. she's more than that. but his throat simply closes and he can't breathe properly. that is enough for his friends to easily notice his silent plea for help. kaya is the one who saves the day.
"she's more than that to tom."
"really? you all seem to be close to her."
no, everyone wants to interject. she's more than that. she became family to them.
"well, yeah. she's a fun person to be with." this time, it's will's turn to save his sorry ass from the spotlight.
after his horrible breakup with bella, the social media suddenly explodes and causes quite a bit of a commotion. at the very least, his fans don't seem to care but tries to cheer him up instead.
"oh, really?" the interviewer says, like she doesn't believe anything these young adults answer.
"why haven't i or any of your fans seen even just a tiny glimpse of pictures of her?" the maze runner cast look at each other before bursting into heaps of melodic laughter. even thomas manages a light chuckle. everyone stares at them, as if they all have grown two heads.
"come on. share it to us. the fans would love to hear some behind the scene stories." of course she doesn't want to be left out.
"thomas' girl doesn't like it when we take pictures of her but that little detail never stops us from doing so." dylan explains after they finally calmed down.
"the crew even caught a video of her trying to climb the makeshift maze wall." aml is quick to add and the maze runner cast has a reminiscing look on their faces.
"will you put that in the bloopers for the upcoming dvd?" someone asks/shouts from the lively audience.
"we want to but at the same time, we don't. it's a very dear memory to us." chris answers, simple and apologetic, and the audience groans in obvious disappointment.
"remember the polaroid incident?" ki-hong suddenly brings up and they beam at the memory.
"oh my god, yes! with her hair–"
"YES!"
and the cast fall into boisterous laughter once more. the audience knows by now that they will never be able to relate them but the interviewer looks unfazed. she looks even more determined to extract information from them than before.
"what about her hair?" everybody abruptly freezes. they know that by simply telling the color of her hair in national television, it's not hard for their respective viewers to miss her in a sea of people.
they stare at thomas who looks very torn in between answering that simple question or ignoring it completely by bringing up one of the very few good memories with her again.
but thomas needs to do this. if he wants to let her go, then he needs to tell them. it has been six months since she last disappeared. thomas is getting really tired of waiting for someone who obviously won't come back.
"she has short, wavy, purple hair." the audience suddenly hushes and cautiously looks around, as if they would be able to catch a glimpse of that peculiar shade of hair color but thomas that knows they won't find any because he already tried that and look where it lands him- in the pits of failure.
where is she even?
because they really miss her.
he misses her.

i can't believe i prioritized this over lively. oh, well. this is certainly better than that piece of trash anyway. have you seen my writing style there? ew, me.
also, i forgot to mention this in the last author's note but kids, it's bad to throw cigarette ashes from the rooftop. you don't know whose head it might end up on.
SweatherWeather24, who is such an awesome person by the way, asked me if meredith is really a ghost or if it's just a schizo thing happening to thomas. my answer is the chapter itself. if chapter one is an attention grabber and chapter two is an introduction, then chapter three is the explanation. from now on, i hope no one gets confused any longer.
some clarification: i decided to use lowercase letters for '▶' chapters and correct capitalization for '◀' chapters.
i hope a lot of you leave votes and comments because i promise you, this is way better than lively. this has actual plot while lively is barely holding up. stay tuned, everyone!
