Chapter 1: A Familiar Face

(Y/N)'s POV

It has been a few months since working with Cerberus defeating the Collectors and saving the galaxy, most specifically the colonists from getting captured and turned into one of them. That time that we all went inside the base to witness the process of it was horrifying to watch. We did lose a few crew members but we did manage to save who we were able to retrieve, like the doctor. Thankfully, the entire team that were in that base to destroy the Collector base made it out in one piece. It does get me wondering what everyone is doing. Well, the only one I was ever in contact with is Garrus. Whenever we aren't busy with anything, he would tell everything about what has been happening back on Palaven, telling me he formed a task force to help defend his home planet. He even told me once that his sister wanted to meet me and get to know me...in a way that she is interested upon seeing a picture of me before joining the Alliance 3 years ago. Of course, that was embarrassing since a woman expressed interest in me but at the same time, Garrus only joked about it since he just wanted to see my reaction and he wouldn't really pair me with his sister because he feels that it wouldn't go well. I mean...I cannot blame him. If my sister wanted to be with Garrus and Garrus doesn't feel right about it, I wouldn't have them paired as well. With everyone else, I haven't heard anything from them. Not like we ended on a bad terms or anything, in fact, I got along with everyone despite the obvious that I am incredibly shy and socially awkward around people, except for Garrus. We knew each other before joining the Alliance and I am always comfortable around him. But to the point, after destroying the base, we all went our separate ways. And even though I never had any problem with anyone on board and even did things with them, I never once received any email or calls from them. Maybe there is a reason behind it but still...that could be said with those who weren't with Cerberus like Ashley and Wrex...nothing from them. Well, it was good while it lasted I guess...at least I still have Garrus.

And you are probably wondering what I have been doing since leaving Cerberus? Well, although I could just return to the Alliance and help fight again throughout the galaxy...I decided for the few months I had at this point, to work at a pet store on the Citadel. And you might think, why a pet store? I mean, I'd be lying if I said I don't have a soft for animals so I thought working in a store where you take care of them in hopes for them to get adopted is something I would like to do away from the killing and galaxy saving. And honestly, working there did help me clear my mind of what I went through during my time fighting and I even used that time to improve on my social skills? Has it gotten better? No. But it's a work in progress. But today, I'm not working because it's my day off and I just want to relax in my room alone. Just laying in my bed, sleeping with no worries whatsoever. That is until I heard my computer start ringing from my desk. I just can't get a day to myself, can I? I get up from the bed and went over to my desk, taking a seat on my chair and look at my screen. There I see Shepard's name requesting to call me. Seeing the commander's name on the screen wanting to do a video call is really surprising to me. I mean, it has been about 6 months since I have talked to her so it is exciting to finally talk to someone from the crew, whether it'd be with the Alliance or Cerberus.

Deciding not to waste any more time, I click on the accept button and there I see Jane Shepard sitting in what looks like a bedroom, seeming really happy to see me. Well, I am the same way as I am smiling uncontrollably. "H-Hi, commander! I-It's so great to see you again!" I say to her happily. Jane chuckles and shake her head. "Come now, (Y/N), you know you do not have to call me by commander." She tells me with a smile. "But it is great to see you too." I rub my neck and smile. "W-Well um...so, Jane...what's been happening since the last time we saw each other?" I ask her. "Well, since the last we saw each other...I was basically placed under arrest for a few months. I just got released yesterday." She tells me. I blinked my eyes and is surprised to hear that. "Wow um...w-why?" Jane sighs softly and looks away for a while before looking back at the screen. "Because I was working with Cerberus. So I was put in the Alliance HQ on Earth and stayed there for months, relieved of duty until recently. They find that I am still the same person I was when I was part of the Alliance and I, along with others including you, help save the galaxy not once but twice...and funny that I say I was part of the Alliance when I was offered to come back...I accepted and now I am back." She says the last part with a smile. I was listening intently about why she was never able to contact me and what everyone on Earth thought about her but I pull a smile when I hear that Jane is back in the Alliance. "That's good to hear...but why did they bring you back?" I ask, feeling rather confused. Jane then goes on her omni-tool to pull something up then my omni-tool suddenly got something. "Wow...did yours get upgraded to send things from different mass relays?" I ask in a joking manner before I pull whatever she sent out on a different monitor. There, I see pictures and information about Cerberus attacking non-human colonies and even kidnapping people. "This is why...apparently Cerberus has been involved with some wrongful activities across the galaxy. Why? We do not know yet...but I am hoping to find out now that I am back on duty." She says. I start reading what was sent to me while I listen to her. "Damn. And I thought Cerberus would be a bit better now but now...I just want to know what the Illusive Man is thinking." I say. "Actually...(Y/N), this call wasn't just to reconnect with you. Which, do not get me wrong, I really want to catch up with you and even spend some time with you when we meet again. But this is also a call in hopes that...well...you want to join me back in the Alliance and help me take down Cerberus." She says before smiling at me. "So, what do you say? Will you join me?" She asks. My face goes a little red just seeing her smile, reminding me of some things when I was around her when she would smile at me. But then I start thinking about the job I got now but...I do often miss fighting and I think I already finish my break so I nod at her, smiling. "Consider myself re-hired haha." I chuckled. Jane smiles more and nod. "Good to hear, (Y/N). I'm coming to the Citadel with the Normandy along with some people you will recognize." She says before getting up from her chair. "Oh! I really missed you a lot. I hope to see you soon." She tells me before hanging up the call. Before she could get a chance to see, my face got really red because...well...someone I had feelings for the longest of time says that she misses me...how can you not get flustered over that?

I stare at the monitor showing the information about Cerberus and begin to wonder why they gone this low? I mean, I knew they were bad news but I joined because of Jane's motives and of course, Garrus was there too...Garrus...is he coming along as well? I hope so. I turn off my computer then get up from my chair, stretching about. "Well...I should let the owner know I am going back to the battlefield...after I take my nap again." I say to myself before I lay in bed. I sigh softly and close my eyes, ready to get my nap as I suddenly start remembering something about Jane.
