Rayla turned left and right on her bed. She whimpered. It was another one of her nightmares. Again. She burst up, awake, and gasp. A tear went down her left eye. Rayla rubbed it and muttered to herself. "Get ahold of yourself, Rayla!"
Meanwhile, Callum was sleeping and drooling on another bedsheet next to Rayla's. Callum turned around his body, facing Rayla, and laid out his hand. Rayla slipped her hands into his, smiling. He wasn't gone, he was just here. Everything will be alright, Rayla reminded herself.
Callum was half-asleep. The boy could feel her hand. It felt warm and soft. He held on to it. Callum could hear quiet sobbing in the distance. Was it....Rayla?
Callum groaned and opened one eye. It was Rayla! Rayla took out her hand when she saw him awake. "I'm sorry-" the moon-elf said. "Don't be." Callum replied and gently grabbed her hand. He tried to get himself up and yawned. "What's the matter?"
"Another nightmare...." Rayla looked away. She didn't want to look stupid in front of the mage.
Callum pulled her closer next to him. "Hey..." Callum said in a soft tone. "It's okay if you don't wanna talk about it." Rayla looked up at her human and cried. She jumped onto Callum, hugging him tightly. Callum yelped in shock.
"Woah....hey, i've got you! No need to cry-"Rayla felt dumb to do this. But she was overrun with emotions. Rayla pulled away from the hug. She stopped weeping and Callum pushed her tears away from her now wet face. "The dream was about you, and you were gone. I've lost so much I don't want to lose you too.." Rayla whispered.
Callum was stunned.
"You're never going to lose me." He smiled and put an arm on Rayla's shoulder. "I'll always love you."
"Even if you....die?" It broke her heart just to say it.
"Even so."
Rayla didn't believe it at first. But she felt better to be in Callum's arms. Rayla doesn't know what will happen in the future, but she'll enjoy every single moment they have together now.
The moon-shadow elf smiled. She kissed Callum on the cheek. "Thank you." She said softly. The tears in her eyes were gone.
Callum blushed. Rayla was so darn cute.
"Goodnight Callum. I love you." Those words felt strange and unfamiliar to her. But she really did love him. She crawled back to her own bed.
"I love you too."
"I hope my nightmares stop." Rayla said, snuggled into her own bed, then glanced at Callum's forest green eyes.
"I have an idea." Callum gripped Rayla's hand. Rayla held onto it. "Here."
Rayla blushed. But to her surprise, she felt better.
And the two fell asleep, holding onto one other.
Who knew such a small gesture could warm one's heart?
