I slammed the door of the car and buckled my seat belt. My mom and I were going to a new horse barn for the first time and I couldn’t wait to get there. When we arrived the first thing I saw was the anxious look in a random horse’s eyes and an ear breaking whistle of a drill captain. I didn’t know friendship, horses, and riding meant so much to me.

Friendship, that one thing you can always depend on, is one thing you can’t live without. When I got out of the car I met the team of girls that made up the drill pod. They were nice, but I still saw them as strangers. The first few meets I rode Mrs. Cindy’s horse Matido. Mrs. Cindy is our drill coach. I wanted to fit in and I did, but it was really hard, but not as hard as befriending my horse Taz.

Horses, something you can’t always understand, are more than just pets. During the first or second month I was searching for a horse of my own. I had to make a choice between two geldings. They were as pretty as pearls. The one I wanted wasn’t the one that Mrs. Cindy had in mind. The one she wanted and the one I got was named Dartangion’s Taz. He is a flaxen chestnut and is gorgeous. In the saddle though, he was a nightmare. He was the devil himself. At first I thought that this match was put together with glass not glue. Mrs. Cindy said she was she was a good matchmaker and she proved herself. She is a matchmaking machine. Over the past years we have been bonding. It required trust, horsemanship, and patience.

Riding, that thing you do on a horse and hope that you won’t fall off, is my hobby. When time came to start riding I started to shake. He bucked and twisted and acted like a stupid rodeo horse. He was as bad as school lunch. He would bolt towards the fence and try to throw me off. There were even times I thought about giving up and just stop riding but, that would never happen, right?

Friendship, horses, and riding can give you good and bad days. I think friendship can’t always hurt. Horses can make excellent friends if you think about it.  My riding, well, just remember never question something that means that much to you.
