"So this is what it's like to feel faint," I thought to myself as I walked robotically and slowly out of my history class and down the hallway toward the stairs to see Principal Lancaster on the floor below.  Why I had been called down there I had not been told, so of couse I was feeling faint.  Extremely faint.  My hands were slimy and shiny with sweat, I was walking blindly with tunnel vision, and at every step my legs felt more and more like jello.

Something told me that I was not in trouble, but that my family was in trouble.

My brother's words that he last said to us two years ago before he finally left for the war began echoing in my head as I continued walking.

"If I die, at least I will die with honor because I died for my country."

The words repeated themselves over and over, louder and louder.  I began to feel ill and stopped to lean against the wall, waiting for my brother's voice in my head to go away.

"There's no point in going down there,"  I shook my head.  "He's dead.  Just accept it and go back to class."

But something pushed me foward away from the wall, and I made my way down the stairs.  Step by step, I could feel my heart start to pound harder and harder as I got closer to the bottom.  Finally, I reached the landing of the first floor and made a left toward the office.  The lable PRINCIPAL on the door shone bright gold as I turned to go through it.  This time, my heart was now pounding in my ears.  With a deep breath and a shaky hand, I turned the knob.

There were two other people already inside the office, Mr. Lancaster at his desk.

"Mom? Dad?" I said in what I never thought would be surprise as two familiar faces turned to look at me.

"Ah, Avery. Come in please." Mr. Lancaster summoned me.
