CHAPTER 1: THE NEW MOON
FIVE MONTHS AGO
Terry walked the lonely hallway to her best friend dorm Nick, for their usual study time. It was late evening and it made the deserted hallways look haunted.
It would have been a bit better if people were around walking to and fro to their various destinations, but today was different as no soul could be found.
Terry pulled his hoodie closer for comfort and security as he muttered
"What remains now is just the banging of windows and doors, plus a ghostly wail to make here look truly haunted."
He made his way to room 119, she soon got there and exhaled deeply as she glanced at the window where the bright full moon stared back at him smirking as if it knew what was going to happen. Checking his phone one last time to confirm his text message telling him to meet him at his dorm by 7:30 pm, he knocked on the door and waited.
"He better not be sleeping with a girl, he made me leave Damon and cancel our movie plan." He muttered knocking again. A still silence followed, he placed his ear on the door to check out if he could make out any movement when he heard a piercing scream.
"NICK! He shouted as he tried to open the door, he could hear the ripping of clothes accompanied by screaming as a scuffle took place behind the door. He dug in his hoodie pocket and found the spare key plus a pepper spray. He had been mugged a couple of times by hoodlums so his mother had brought him a pepper spray as protection.
The noises and the screams suddenly seized as the door opened on its own slowly leaving Terry bit scared and hesitant to enter. He tightened his grip on the pepper spray and entered.
"Nick?! If this is a joke, it isn't funny anymore..." Terry was caught short as he came in face to face with a big white growling wolf.
"Jesus on crutches! What the hell?" Terry whispered as he froze on the spot, his eyes scanning the room for anything at all. He saw the clothes Nick wore to class today shredded to bits and stained in blood.
The wolf howled snapping him back into reality as it charged forward slowly making him to retrace his steps.
"Good wolf, who is a good boy." Terry said trying to calm both himself and the wolf down, the wolf almost became calm for a minute before launching an attack on him. For a moment, there he almost screamed but adrenaline overtook him, pumping him as he turned and ran down the hallway, the wolf hot on his trail. He kept running as he missed his steps and tumbled down the stairs, spraining his ankle in the process. The wolf looked down on him from the top of the stairs as Terry dragged himself backwards on the ground struggling to get up. It took a stance and then jumped, claws out soaring in the air.
Terry instinctively put his arms to shield himself as he screamed shutting his eyes waiting for the attack that never came. Instead he felt a shove as someone pushed him out of harm's way. He opened his eyes to see Damon besides him.
"Damon?! But how did you get here so fast?" Terry asked relieved, grateful yet bewildered.
"Uhm, I am a pretty fast runner, I guess." Damon said nervously.
"I want you to run and find the closest safe place to hide." He continued.
"And leave you behind to face a wolf, hell no." Terry said shaking his head violently.
Believe me, the wolf should be the least of your worries. Go and find help, I will hold it off. Just go. Damon said pushing his closest friend back.
But Nick...he was there, in that room and the wolf.... Terry paused swallowing.
Nick is fine, I saw him outside. He went to call the police. Go to the police station and you will see him there. He was the one who told me to go and get you. now leave. Damon shouted as Terry nodded his head and limped down the hallways to the exit as the wolf stood up from there and began to walk towards him, growling in a pissed off tone.
Okay, Nick. Now it is just you and me. Damon said as his eyes began to glow pure red before his claws came out. Nick started running towards him, as he jumped but Damon caught him and flung him into the wall, as the wall cracked from the impact.
Calm down, Nick. I don't want to fight you. Damon said as Nick stood up, again on all fours as he charged forward.
Just then, Damon howled into the still clear night as Nick immediately paused, his head bowing low as it knew who was howling. His alpha, the alpha.
And just like that, other wolves howled too, in the distance acknowledging the alpha's howl as Nick changed back to his human form as he leaned on the wall, plain naked as he held his aching head.
What the hell happened? He said amidst groans as two other guys came rushing to them, as they stopped seeing the scenario in front of them.
Guys, we heard the howl. What happened? Dean said coming forward with his brother Sammy as Damon removed his jacket and gave to Nick to cover his nakedness.
Well, Nick over here wolfed out and gave Terry, a damn panic attack. Now how are we going to explain the sudden disappearance of the wolf and all those howling about. He is a human; he will think he is insane. Damon said as he scratched his head out of frustration.
Today is a new moon, I couldn't control myself. I totally forgot today was a study night for the both of us. I thought I would be able to control it but it was my first shift. It wanted to come out, I couldn't stop it.
Never mind about that for now. First we need to come up with a plan on how to get you to the station before Terry realizes I lied.
