"Wake up Ethan!" A familiar voice yelled in my ear.
"What?" I replied, my voice gruff and low, "What time is it?" I blinked, my eyes not used to the light that engulfed my room.
And then everything that happened last night came back to me.
The moon, falling down into the sea, losing all light...
"Hurry up! It's 7 o'clock, you overslept!" Evie yelled, and I quickly jumped out of bed.
"Oh no! Not the first day of school!" I wailed. I hurried into the toilet and brushed my teeth, sprinted towards my cabinet, grabbed the clothes I saw first, and quickly shoved them on as I ran out of my room.
Evie giggled and raced behind me, yelling, "The bus is coming in 5 minutes!" I ignored her and jumped down to the first floor from the landing of the second floor. And mind you, that jump was worth 18 stairs but I completed it in one big fat jump. I landed right beside the dining table, swiping a piece of toast as I rushed out the front door, snagging my backpack on the way.
"Ethan! Your lunch!" Rachel yelled from the kitchen, and a lunch box came flying out of the window. "Thanks!" I yelled back, and caught the box with a jump.
Evie came after me, and she raced me to the bus stop. "I bet I am faster than you!" She yelled, as she started accelerating.
I mean, sure, Evie was fast, but I was fast too.
I climbed onto a stop sign and jumped off it, using the force from the jump to propel me even further. Evie catched up by throwing a rock at the back of my head, not strong enough to leave me unconscious but enough to make me slow down.
We arrived at the bus stop just as the school bus stopped by the stand.
"I was faster." Evie said, as we boarded the bright yellow bus, the sound of children's chatter all around us.
"Whatever," I replied, not really caring.
The students in the school bus were all talking loudly, and they barely acknowledged us as we passed – There was no reason for them to.
Since me and Evie lived at the end of the neighbourhood, we were the last stop the bus had to make, and the only seats left were at the very back, right behind a few nasty looking boys.
"Sheesh, they look like they should be put in jail or something." Evie muttered, smoothing out her skirt as she sat down.
I nodded along, wrinkling my nose at the sight of them.
The biggest boy of the bunch had a tattoo of a skull on his arm. He was bald and wore a black shirt which said "Death", and looked to be the leader of the group.
Another boy was scrawny and had pimples scattered all around his face, his teeth crooked and his blonde hair was spiked and looked like it could be used as a knife.
The third boy had a bulky build, with long brown hair that greased at the ends, and an item in his pocket that looked suspiciously like a sharp knife.
The last boy looked pretty normal, except that when he turned to show his left side, all his skin was dark and burnt, unlike his right side where his skin was light.
"Probably a burn from the fire." Evie commented, noticing where my gaze landed.
I nodded half-heartedly. Most of my attention lingered at the happenings of last night, and I couldn't focus on what Evie was saying.
"Hellooo? Ethan? Are you there?" Evie asked, waving a hand in front of his eyes.
"Yeah, yeah." I replied and pushed away her hand.
