Breakups were never meant to be quiet. There was meant to be shouting and throwing and ultimatums. Arguments that concerned neighbors enough to call the police, right? Full of emotion and passion and perhaps even love. Not weeks of being ignored, ending with you silently sending the message, 'we're through.' All while just lounging about on your dingy sofa, feeling rather numb.
Funny enough, that seemed to get his attention, sending you half-hearted apologies and offering dates. However, as much as you liked the sudden affection, you mentally prepared yourself for this and did what was done unto yourself. Muting your phone and going on with your day. You tried your best to think of anything other than him, which was surprisingly easy now that you dumped him.
In a weird way, you felt free. Like there was no obligation to be a good girlfriend. You could even go out and party, if the scene didn't fill you with anxiety. Or that you didn't like to do anything new. Okay, perhaps almost nothing changed in your life, but it felt good. Maybe dating was never meant for you. Yea that was probably it. You have been told by family members that you were too smart for boys. Speaking of smart-You had an engineering/computer science thesis to work on.
You sat up at the realization. While obsessing over a boy who never even bothered to think about you, you completely forgot what you should've been working on. You snatched your laptop and settled on the couch. You needed to catch up on your work.
There was no way you were going to bail out on this assignment. You had to get into some shady business for it, but you were too curious to pull out now. As the technology evolved, people brought it upon themselves to take up the role of God and mess around with Artificial Intelligence. Causing some interesting results. Some lived as public figures, some took up jobs, many committed suicide. Then, the question of what made something human was posed. If artificial persons were in fact, worth recognizing as people. That was the question you wanted to tackle. The search for such an answer lead up to you looking into perhaps one of the most infamous cases of such AI.Freddy Fazbear Entertainment was once a massive corporation, on par with Disney, or Sony. It was most famous for the animatronic-based restaurants. It started with the bots simply going through the motions of serving patrons. Then some maniac decided to implement some kind of free-roaming AI into the animatronics. That was what captures the people's attention. After many successful side projects, such as feature films or merchandise, the company blew up. Eventually, hyper-intelligent animatronics were created for the sole purpose of entertainment. There's a saying out there, something like the bigger the giant, the harder they fall, or something.
That was exactly what happened. Their largest restaurant, the Pizzaplex, burned to the ground. It was never revealed as to how. Some claim arson, while others claim faulty wiring. That, however, lead to some massive leaks. Bodies were found. Cold cases reopened. The government had to even step in and every restaurant had to be closed and inspected. Too many became crime scenes. The CEO at the time was caught trying to skip town and was arrested as well as many others involved. To call it a scandal would be a borderline insulting understatement. You were aware of the many, many rumors regarding mind control and using human souls to make even better AI or to even achieve immortality. Or something like that. Rather silly claims in your opinion. However, the souls theory was reasonable with how human the animatronics seemed to be in their day. You could tell through videos you analyzed time and time again, as well as the interviews you conducted with former patrons and employees of the pizzaplex.
Apparently, many of the robots there were revealed to have complex emotions and multi-dimensional personalities. You made separate pieces for almost every bot that showed such features. Your favorite is the daycare one. One that had a sort of multi-personality feature affected by light. As fascinating as it was, not many had any good memories of it as it had a creepy and disproportionate build compared to the posters. Shame you couldn't find much on that one, but at least you had plenty of other subjects for your thesis.
Over time, you found yourself leaning towards the argument that AI emotion still counted as emotion and should be validated as much. Once you made that opinion public, you received an email. An opportunity to work with the very technology you studied once your finished thesis was published. It was all so vague and strange at first, but the starting pay was convincing. So you went along. You let the stranger know you would think about it as you worked. The stranger revealed more and more about their plans while keeping track of your thesis. They made arguments that supported your thought on emotion.
Over the year, the stranger sent suspiciously large amounts of money and documents that were meant to be classified. All about the pizzaplex animatronics and other buildings in the area. All while still making offer after offer as a technician if a new Fazbear restaurant were to open. Why they wanted to make such financial sacrifices for a business that may never succeed was beyond you. Then again, it didn't seem like you were getting paid to worry about that.As you were typing away on your laptop, you received another series of texts from your now ex. He went on and on about how much he loved you and wanted to spend time with you. An almost comedic lie, but it gave you a thought. People lie about their emotions all the time, and others can't even tell the difference. Even in this new day and age, people still struggle to understand the physical source of more complex emotion and the extent of one's self-awareness. There is no way to tell if one truly feels what they claim. AI has become so complex over the recent years, people lost track of their thoughts. Perhaps that is the fine line where humans and non-humans laid. You look down at your laptop. Your future boss would be proud of this revelation.
Your ex was quick to give up after a few days. Which made you feel a little better for suddenly leaving him. Then again, it was for the best. You were able to put your mind to work on other things. Mainly just school, but once again, you've been given an offer from the stranger after sending your newest thoughts. This time they offered a relocation program. You'd be given a selection of locations in a specific county. Across the country. Housing was stupidly expensive at the time, with rent and student loans not allowing you to save up for a house. Yet, having to depend on this weirdo was a risk. Having someone else pay for your living expenses felt like you were signing your life away.
Then again, what did you have here? You were awful at making friends, you were not exactly close to your family, and you just so happened to recently get out of a relationship. Was it so big of a deal to pack everything and just go? To completely restart in a whole new environment? Was it worth the possible years it could take to adapt?Your answer was immediately yes once you saw your housing options.

I'll try to keep this interesting from here on out, I just wanna give a solid intro to this fic. Some context, some backstory, you know? Thanks for reading this btw :)
