Chapter 1
The Starting Flight
It was the first day of September and now I could see the first hints of autumn everywhere. Leaves changed their colors from green to red, orange, or yellow and mist rose up from the earth in the mornings. The days and nights got colder but I still hoped for sunshine, so I could spend my days outside to enjoy the colors painted by nature. Now was the time when I can eat apples directly from the tree or pick blackberries from the bush. It was harvest time, the instant before nature prepared for the long sleep of cold rainy season.
I woke up in the first light and felt the chilly breeze of the wind. It was raining outside that I could almost hear the tiny drops of water bucketing into the ample soil of the earth. I would still close my eyes because I would want to sleep. Sluggishness knocked at me or maybe it was because of the sturdy force of the gravity that gave me the reason not to stand up from my single bed.
I am Risselle B. Edullantes, 14 years of age and a junior student from a well-known Science-oriented school. Honestly, it was not my decision to sit on a chair, to listen everything what the teacher talked about and to study here. It just happened.
“You’ll learn much from that school. It has a good quality of education,” my father said. I had no choice but to nod and agree. These were the words that I could not forget when I started stepping on the grasses as well as the small stones of the campus.
As time passed by, I realized that my father was right. I learned many things what a student must learn. As a junior student, I knew that this was just the beginning of my journey and I still have much learning to be inserted and chained into the empty spaces of my small brain.
It was the last day of the month. As I heard the ringing of the alarm clock, I immediately woke up from my bed and hurriedly arranged it as well as my things for the school.
“The breakfast is ready,” my mother said with a serious face. I had no idea as to what she was thinking about but one thing was for sure, she was the strictest in every corner of the house. However, I understand why her attitude was like that. I knew that she just wanted a good citizen, and us, my two siblings and me, to be responsible in the near future.
My family ate the served food on the table peacefully. There were five hotdogs and ten boiled eggs. Of course, we should not forget the rice. Before I ate my food, I had prayed for a while to thank the Lord for everything. We do not have any house cleaner who can help my mother do the household chores. Since I knew that I would be already late on school, my only contribution to her was to wash the dishes where we ate. Afterwards, I brushed my teeth, took a bath, and wore my house clothes. I was the one who ironed my school uniform, and then I changed my clothes and wore the school uniform.
“Ate, can you teach me this lesson in our math? I don’t get it,” my younger brother asked, with a little disappointment drawn on his face.
I love math. For me, one thing that made math on top than the other subjects was that there was no lot of memorizations required. If there were, maybe only a few formulas and a little understanding on the lessons of the teacher.
Furthermore, this subject was very challenging and enjoyable at the same time. As I skimmed through his notes, the topic was all about the parts of a circle. Well, as far as what I could remember, some of its parts were the radius, chord, diameter, and the center. The radius is the line from any point on the circle to the center of the circle. The chord is a line in the circle from any point to another point on the circle not passing through the center. The diameter is the line from any point on the circle to another point passing through the center. The center is the point at the center of the circle.
