Everyone dies eventually, it's just a matter of how and when. When Peter thought of the hundreds of possible ways he could perish, being sacrificed to the outside was no where on that list.
The outside... What a dreadful place.
-Final chapter-
Twenty one students had come on this field trip. Not even so much as four survived. Not even three, not even two... one. One person survived.
Maybe things would have been different. Maybe, there was a chance that at least two of them could have survived. But was there really anything left to fight for? Everyone was dead. Deadly walkers were everywhere, and aside from them, there were now mutant animals crawling around who knows where.
Peter was no longer afraid. He had no reason to be. He wasn't afraid of death, he had no urge to survive this place anyways. So as the warehouse crumbled around him, he was calm. He didn't have high hopes, there was nothing he could lose at this point anyways. MJ was gone. Ned was gone. How badly did the world need Spider-Man?
"Cover your heads!" Iisan boomed as the ceiling fell around them. The deadly walkers were no longer Peter's biggest problem. He'd have to worry about them later if he didn't get crushed to death by a pile of rubble. But again, he really didn't care.
It was loud. Horribly loud. The deadly walkers were screeching in anger as massive chunks of cement came barreling down on their heads. Peter ducked, as if that would protect him from the disaster around him.
He felt a particularly heavy chunk of cement strike him in the back and he fell forward, being crushed to the ground. Not even a yard away from him was Lauren's dead body being buried in the debris.
And then it was quiet. All he could hear was what little remained of the deadly walkers moaning and screeching in anger. The dust settled. Peter couldn't move. The chunk of cement that had hit him wasn't the only thing pinning him down now. It was like his Sophomore homecoming night all over again.
His nervous system felt like it had been lit aflame. His ribs were definitely broken, and perhaps his spin was as well—he couldn't really tell. It was hard to breathe. In fact, his lungs aches whenever he did so, which even then, was a huge struggle.
He mustered up the strength to try and move. After several failed attempts, he finally got he hands underneath him for support. He pushed against the ground, raising his body just slightly.
Pain flooded his senses. His eyes darted to the most prominent source of it, and he felt his heart drop. He couldn't believe it. It didn't feel real, what he was seeing. He didn't know what to do, so he just resumed his previous position of helplessness. He began to cry.
