Melanie sat on a patch of moss, coloring in a leaf coloring book with some crayons Angelita materialized for her.
And she daydreamed about the dark Fey.
Those supposedly evil and forbidden creatures that her mother warned her to steer clear of.
With their twisty horns and black scaly wings and dark magic.
The Dark Fey were forbidden to leave their dark, accursed woodland home of MoorWood.
And Melanie's kind, the Pixies, weren't allowed to leave their field of pastel flowers called Sleepaway Meadow until they had finished their training. Then they would be moved to Pixie Hollow forever, only allowed to leave during the solstices.
Melanie sketched a Dark Fey, standing tall and menacing with unnatural horns and long, dark blue hair, with a black dress clinging to her body in just the right way.
"What are you drawing, Mel?" Angelita asks, sitting down beside her.
Melanie's pink butterfly wings twitched slightly as she slammed the sketchbook shut. "Hey, it was just a question."
"It's nothing, alright? Just let it go..." Melanie says dismissively.
"You're in denial, Mel." Angelita says warmly.
"Was it a hot Dark Fey again?"
"What? I've never even seen one. How would I know what they even look like?" Melanie says.
"I've seen them." Angelita says with a shrug.
"What? How?" Melanie says in shock.
"Um, I walk through the MoorWood at night. I mean, I can manifest a bioluminescent glow in my hands. I'm a living flashlight." Angelita says, smirking. "You should come with me tonight, Mel. It'll be fun!"
"It's against the rules, Ang! We could both get detention!" Mel says indignantly.
"Come on. Maybe we could pick some nightshade berries for Kelly." Angelita says with a malicious grin.
"You mean?..."
"Yeah. I mean, I've told you a million times to go for the throat, Mel."
Melanie was in shock. Should she? Could she? Would she?
"Alright. I'll go with you tonight. But only if you promise to use that illusion spell to make the teachers think we haven't left and to hide us from the Dark Fey."
"Deal."
