I woke up to the sound of screams, feminine-sounding screams. Doesn't make sense considering I'm in the middle of nowhere, in a timeshare cabin. All alone, no pets, no companion, no friends, just me, myself, and I. I stared at the empty ceiling waiting for more, to determine if I was hallucinating.
The grandfather clock down the hall filled the silence with its ticking. Never in my time spent at this cabin, was I disturbed with screams. Nobody out here for miles, hunting isn't allowed because of the cabin, and there are no hiking trails nearby.
Tick
Tock
Tick
Tock
No sounds followed. Do I go back to sleep and forget it all? Do I call somebody?
Another scream echoed
"I don't remember owls sounding like that," I mumbled, I looked over to the window, still in bed, no lanterns, no car lights, just stars, and darkness. Not like I would see much, the entire property is littered with thick trees. I looked back at the ceiling, debating on getting up, or rolling over and forgetting it all. I looked over at this funky painting on the wall, that I had always questioned. Not exactly bedroom fitting, more creepy than ever.
The owner of the timeshare cabin told me a horror story about it.
"It's a creature that hunts in the night, looks for lost travelers or children to eat. It blends in with bigger trees to go unnoticed, doesn't like light. It lures in people by sounding like a female screaming, so concerned people will go looking for the screaming girl, luring in its dinner."
I have probably heard that story over twenty times, the owner likes telling me it every time I stay here. I honestly want to move the photo out of here. Doesn't bring me nightmares, but it's creepy. Maybe that's where the screams come from? But, they just started showing up, I have never heard screams till tonight?
The phone in the other room started ringing.
"Your joking..." I mumbled, I rolled out of my warm bed, out into the cold, with my grandma-themed slippers, and shuffled into the hallway. Moonlight shined through the windows, lighting the long, old carpet rug that led to the stairway. I went into the other room, just as cold as my room, and picked up the phone,
"Miss? Miss?" A male's voice said,
"Who is this? And why are you calling when the moon's out?" I answered grudgingly, falling asleep standing up.
"Oh, you're alive... I'm just making sure your not the screams I heard." The man said, "I own the cabin, the one you have a timeshare in. I live on the other side of the trees, miles upon miles out, but just making sure." He...heard them too?
"You heard that too? Are there any other cabins near?" I asked, more focused on the situation now, occasionally shivering due to it being cold.
"Yeah! I woke up out of a dead sleep! I at first thought I was dreaming, so I rolled back over in bed and was drifting off, till I heard another one, then I remembered you were in the cabin and called to make sure you were okay. With how far away civilization is, id hate for something to happen to you. Toby," He explained,
"I honestly thought I was hallucinating, or...dreaming. I'm okay though, besides being cold, you never fixed the heater like you said you would Dylan." I explained,
A faint scream whistled through the winds,
"DID YOU HEAR IT?!" Dylan whisper-yelled, the scream sounded closer, could have been because of the phone, or that it's genuinely closer. I walked over to the window and peered through the white curtains, nothing out of the ordinary. Not much to see anyway, with no light. "Toby?"
