I Know How You Feel

My jaw dropped I felt like I was about to pass out. But instead I looked at my mom in the eye and said "Okay. Mom are you ready to go?" "Sweetie are you sure you want to leave? And besides where do you want to go?" my mom asked me unsure what I wanted. I waited a moment to think. "To school. I mean I've only missed one class." I told her. "Well if that's what you want then okay." my mom told me as she waved goodbye to Kate. "Julie wait! I wanted to give you this." She said as she gave me a gift wrapped in a baby blue ribbon. "Thank you." I said managing to force a small smile. "You're welcome. And one more thing. My friends son is going to go to your school and he won't have a lot of friends. Today is his first day. His name is Jake and I was just wondering if maybe you could show him around the school." I nodded my head slowly and me and my mom left and went to school. My back pack was in the back of the car because I left it there the day before since I didn't have homework. Once we got to school I got out of the car and headed to my second class, science. When I went in everyone stared at me as I gave Mr. John my late slip. Liz had science with me too she looked at me confused. There was only one empty seat by a guy I've never seen so I assumed it was Jake. I took my seat and pulled out my book. "Hi I'm Julie." I said to Jake. "You're new here right?" I asked even though I knew the answer. "Yeah. My name is Jake. I think I've heard about you from my mom. Do you know Kate?" He asked me as soon as he asked me if I knew Kate my face turned red. I put my finger to my mouth to tell him to be quite. "Sit by me at lunch and we can talk." I said as I looked back to my book. "Oh I know you. Isn't your last name Hart? And you're adop-" he said but he couldn't finish because I interrupted him and said "Can you please shut up I'm trying to do my work." I guess I said it a little louder then a whisper because Mr. John gave me "the look". I took a deep breath in and then let it out. "Gosh some one is sassy." He said to himself but loud enough for me to hear. Eventually it was time for lunch and I saw Jake looking around like he was lost I got up and told Liz that I'd be back in a second. I pulled Jake by his arm to the table Liz and I sat at. "I swear if you tell anyone about me being adopted I'll-" he cut me off "Hey listen I know what happened today and I'm sorry and I promise I won't tell anyone because. Well. I'm adopted too." he said in a soothing voice. "Kate." I said. "Hey don't be mad at her she just didn't know what to do so she asked my mom and I over heard." he said grabbing my arm because I tried to leave. "Okay it's official. I'm totally lost." Liz said. I rolled my eyes at her. "I'll tell you later I don't feel like taking about it right now." I said reassuring her I'm okay. A tear went down my face I tried to hold it in but I couldn't. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
