A brisk autumn breeze whistled though the air and a siren howled in the distance. Near the siren, a white hot search light pierced the air. The barking of blood hounds sounded in the background and the shouts of police followed as they chased after the animals.
My heart pounded wildly as it tried to escape my chest. I sprinted through the long, grassy, open plain, nearing the thick foliage that surrounded it. I watched as the trees came nearer and nearer, coming forward to encompass me and take keep me safe.
Small wood chips suddenly erupted from the vast expanse of trees in front of me. I felt a stinging pain in my ear. Reaching up, I put two fingers to my ear, then held them out in front of my face. Red. They were red. There was blood. Another boost of adrenaline surged through my body at the sight of the scarlet liquid and I urged myself to go even quicker.
The thick forest was finally only a few feet away and I kept sprinting as bullets pinged off trees surrounding me wood chips spraying in my wake. Soon the engulfed me and swallowed me whole. Lose branches clawed at my arms and face. I could still hear the shouts of people behind me as I moved. The canopy of trees above my head blokes out the sun, causing me to stumble. I still continued, my legs pumped as fast as I could and my arms swung as if I was running for my life. And I was. All for one secret.
