Today's lesson is the Japanese onomatopoeia and how it is used. Sometimes for beginners, it is difficult to transition from one sound in English, or any language, to Japanese. Hopefully, this chapter helps most or some of you. These are the different sounds in Japanese:

The next list of sounds are just sounds when the actions are recreated. Just like if you read manga, whether in English or Japanese, if you see a little noise mark next to the character, then it's just an explanatory sound. For example, if the character is smiling, then the little noise mark next to the character would say ' Smile ' in Japanese and or English. These are the examples:

Feelings:

1. Anger: イライラ ( E-Ra-E-Ra)

2. Worry: クヨクヨ (Ku-Yo-Ku-Yo)

3. Hesitant: ウジウジ (Eugene-Eugene)

4. To Become Angry: プンプン (Pu-n-Pu-n)

5. Impatience: ジリジリ (Jerry-Jerry)

Basic Sound Qualities:

1. Quickly: ドンドン (Don-Don)

2. Careless: ノウノウ (No-ew-No-ew)

3. Businesslike: キビキビ (Key-Be-Key-Be)

4. Plenty Of Something: タツプリ (Tap-Ri)

5. Rattling/ Clattering: ガラガラ (Gah-Ra-Gah-Ra)

Human Actions:

1. Smile: ニコニコ (Nico-Nico)

2. Stare: マヅマヅ ( Muji-Muji)

3. Mumble: ブツブツ ( Boo-Boo)

4. Chatting Among Yourself Quietly: ピチヤクチヤ (Pe-Chiya-Ku-Chiya)

5. Muttering To Yourself: ポツリ (Pori)

6. Getting Excited: フクフク (Fu-Ku-Fu-Ku)

You can use these sounds to call something or just make sound effects. Lime if you were calling. a cat to come to you. In English, you would just say ' kitty, kitty' for it to come near you. But in Japanese, the general calling for a cat to come to you is ' me mo, me mo'. Remember, different pronunciations. That is all for today.  Thank you and the picture as reference. Look at the sounds next to her and use them as examples also. The picture does not belong to me.
