CHAPTER THREE |
begin again***
BLAINE KNOWS THAT after a bottle of wine he's susceptible to oversharing and on Friday he was heartbroken and nursing a bottle of red, trying to figure out how to tell his boss that he'd been dating his husband for almost two years now. The secret was weighing heavily on him and in his drunken stupor, he pulled out his laptop and began emailing Kurt. He regretted it the moment he hit send, but by the time his brain caught up to it, it was too late. He didn't get a reply. He hoped that maybe it had gone to Kurt's junk mail and so he deleted it the morning after and prayed for the best when he walked into the office Monday morning.
Blaine kept his head down, plopping into his seat quickly so as not to draw too much attention, but luck wasn't on his side today. The phone rang from his desk and he quickly noticed it as Kurt's extension. He took a deep breath before he picked it up. He was so getting fired today.
"Good morning, Kurt." Blaine's voice waned very quickly.
"My office. We need to talk." Kurt hung up quickly. Blaine hated that Kurt's office was complete glass because he could feel his boss's eyes watching him like a hawk right now.
Blaine quickly gathered his things and prepared for imminent death, or at least a rather shameful firing. There was no way Kurt wasn't going to fire him. He knew in his heart of hearts that he did the right thing and Kurt deserved to know that his husband had been cheating, but Blaine didn't really do it for him. He did it for himself. If he couldn't have his fairytale with Sebastian, then neither could Kurt. It was as simple as Sebastian just wanting everyone else to share his despair and it was selfish, but there was no going back now.
When he knocks on the doorframe, Kurt motions to the seat in front of his desk. Blaine closes the door behind him, but he supposes it won't really make much of a difference because when Kurt inevitably starts throwing magazines and swatches at him, his coworkers would see it anyway. Blaine sat in the chair, chewing on his bottom lip just waiting for Kurt to look in his direction as the older man sat typing away at his computer.
Then without preamble or even a semblance of eye contact, Kurt asks, "When did you meet my husband?"
His question is clear and his tone sure. There is no hesitance in his questioning. He is simply looking for answers and Blaine, the idiot he is, takes so long to comprehend the question that Kurt finally stops typing and looks up at him, repeating the question again.
Blaine coughs into his fist awkwardly, shifting to cross his legs the other way as he tries to slice the tension away from them. He knows it's a losing battle. Nothing about this conversation is normal. "Well, uh, two years ago. At a bar... the Warbler--"
Kurt finishes his sentence. "The Warbler Lounge. That's his favorite bar."
Blaine notes that though Kurt said it confidently, there's a sadness peeking through his gaze as he permits Blaine to continue. He inagines he'd also be very upset if his husband of almost five years had been cheating on him for two of those as well. He was already pissed enough about the fact that his boyfriend of two years had a whole husband and he'd been playing the dutiful mistress unknowingly for so long.
"He bought me a drink. We danced, talked. I, uh... I really liked him. We were there till close and then when they kicked us out, he took me to this diner across the street. I took him to my apartment afterwards and he stayed the night. The next morning, he took me for coffee and before I knew it we were just... he was my boyfriend. I-I never knew about you, Kurt. I swear! I just found out this week and--"
Kurt raises his hand to stop Blaine's ramble and he frowns but stops speaking. A little tremble falls from Kurt's lips and buries his face in his hands.
