No, it's impossible. This can't be. I felt my stomach drop.
"Hello, Razzy," breathed the voice on the other side. A chill raced down my spine. That smooth, balmy voice with a violent undertone.
"Who is this?" I stammered, even though I already knew. Milo. His voice was unmistakable. But how? I gripped the side of the doorway, my knees threatening to buckle.
"Don't act like you don't know, Razzy. We've been keeping tabs on you for years and now it's time." He laughed. "You still belong to us and you always have. We're simply reining in your leash. Be a good boy and do as the boss says, okay? We need you now more than ever, dear," he purred. I could practically see the smirk on his face.
"What the hell do you want from me?" I snarled. This couldn't be happening. I had been free for years from the syndicate. I'd even moved across the country to get away.
"Look, the boss wants his favorite spy back, alright? And don't put up a fight Razzy, I'm asking nicely." There was ice in his seductive tone.
I felt sick. My head was swirling with memories and fear. "I refuse. I'll- I'll call the police and report the syndicate. You have no authority over me anymore. You can't make me do your dirty work." I tried to sound firm, but fear tinged my voice. A muffled laugh came from the phone.
"Oh, Razzy, you haven't changed, have you? You are still a naughty teenager who lacks discipline. Does boss need to teach you a lesson when you get here? I'm sure he'd be glad to."
"Leave me alone!" I screamed into the speaker, anger overpowering my fear. I couldn't let them take control of my life. Not again. I'd rather die than be in their hands working as their inside man.
The mic went silent. The world was starting to spin. I crouched down, trying not to pass out.
"Be at the airport at eight, Razzy. You're lucky you are so valuable to us or I wouldn't be so polite. We've arranged a flight for you on the boss's private jet. Don't be late, darling, or else."
The reality of my situation struck me. "You can't do this." My heart was pounding.
"Oh, but we can. Might I remind you that you have no choice. Don't make me fetch you myself, you wouldn't like that, I assure you," Milo cooed. Milo was the boss's righthand man and a man to be feared. I quite remember fearing him. One slap from him could rock your world.
"No. I won't come. You can't make me uncover dirty little secrets like you once did. Stay away from me, Milo. I'm not a helpless teenager anymore. You-"
"Razzy," he interrupted sharply, "you're being awfully rude, don't you think? Anymore of this and consequences will await you." The silence was so loud. "The jet will soon arrive. See you in New York, Razzy. We have so much to talk about." His last words were loaded with all sorts of things that I didn't want to think about.
"Wait, hang on! Please- just, I can give you money if that's what-" The line went dead. My heart was beating through my chest. My worst nightmare was coming true. The Albini crime syndicate wanted me back. After all these years, the boss wanted back his French boy. The boy who made his boss millions by learning all the clients' dirty little secrets.
Hot tears were rolling down my face and my whole body felt numb. No, I had never really escaped them. It had been four years since they had taken me at the age of sixteen. Now, everything was happening again. The loop was starting over. I was going to be their spy.
