3:37 AM.
The devils hour.
The hour Hitoshi lays awake staring at his phone. He's careful enough to not go on any apps to alert others that he's up at this hour.
He knows that people are aware that he has a sleeping problem but they don't know how bad it is. His foster parents didn't believe him when he told them about it and refused to get him medicine.
If his foster parents didn't believe him why would anyone else?
He sighs and turns off his phone. He gets up and quietly makes his way down to the kitchen.
Tea doesn't help but he's gonna make some anyways. It's soothing but it never helps. He stops when he sees someone laying on the couch. Aizawa.
Hitoshi is just going to have to be quiet.
He turns on the small light above the sink and gets to work. Hitoshi knows how to be quiet. He knows he'll get in trouble if he's not.
He leans against the counter playing on his phone while the water boils. His eyes flicker between the water and to the living room.
A few minutes later his tea is ready and he's sitting at the table. He doesn't even bother going on his phone. His thoughts take over.
"Would medication even help with my insomnia?"
"I'm way behind . I need to catch up."
"How did I even get in the hero course anyways?"
He finishes off his tea and gets the feeling that he should look up.
Oh damn.
There's a dark shadowy figure in the door way.
"Okay, so you're either a hallucination, a shadow demon, or Aizawa." Hitoshi rubs his eyes to see if it's actually a hallucination. Well, that's what happens when you get about 8 hours of sleep in the past 4 days.
"Yep, I'm definitely a shadow demon." Aizawa huffs out and enters the kitchen.
"Good thing I'm down with my demons." Aizawa just stares at him and Hitoshi shrugs.
"What are you doing up, kid?" Aizawa asks taking a seat across from Hitoshi.
"Couldn't sleep."
"Any reason why?"
"Nope." Hitoshi lies through his teeth. He just physically can't fall asleep.
Hitoshi can't handle the stare he's getting from his teacher so he gets up and washes his mug. He checks the time and it's already almost 5 in the morning.
"I'll see you in a bit." Hitoshi leaves before Aizawa can say anything.
He takes a shower and gets ready for school.
—
Why is today so different? Why is he so damn tired today? Is this his limit?
They are in the middle of training and his body is just not cooperating with him. Everything just seems to move in slow motion. He sees Ojiro's tail coming at him but his body doesn't move.
Hitoshi is flung across the room and he just lays there trying to catch his breath. He fights to keep his eyes open. So tired.
Someone's looking down at him.
"Hitoshi, are you with me kid?"
"Shadow demon." Hitoshi mumbles. Aizawa rolls his eyes. Hitoshi tries to get up but Aizawa keeps him down.
"No, I'll help you up in a second but I want you to answer a few questions first." Hitoshi tries to protest that he's fine and can keep going but Aizawa doesn't let him get a word out.
"When was the last time you slept?" Aizawa asks.
"Uh, yesterday." Aizawa holds back a sigh.
"How long?"
"About 2 hours."
"Insomnia?" Hitoshi just lays there and stares up at the ceiling. He hates that his brain won't let him sleep. Absolutely hates it.
"I just want to sleep but my stupid brain won't let me." A few stray tears leak out of Hitoshi's eyes but doesn't move to wipe them away. He doesn't care anymore.
"We can get medicine for that." Hitoshi shakes his head.
"You need parental consent to give a student medicine. My foster parents don't believe me so it's useless." Aizawa sighs knowing he's right. U.A. legally can't give a student medicine unless a parent approves.
"I'll talk to them."
"Don't bother." Aizawa is most definitely going to bother. He helps the teen up and the slowly make their way to Recovery Girl's office.
Iida knows the drill if Aizawa has to step away so he knows his students will listen.
Aizawa keeps an eye on his student as they walk. He's always known the purple hair teen had sleeping problems but he wanted to see if the kid would come to him first. Aizawa honestly didn't think it would get this bad but he should've known. He does deal with insomnia himself.
They reach Recovery Girl's office and Hitoshi gets on the bed as instructed.
"It's always your class." Recovery Girl shakes her head but has a small smile on her face.
"He's probably too tired for your quirk but I was wondering if have any melatonin." Recovery Girl nods and goes to grab a container.
"Have you ever tried this before?" Hitoshi shakes his head no.
"Okay, let's just try one before you go to bed and if it doesn't work we can bump it up to two." Hitoshi nods and takes the bottle. He looks it over and nods.
He lets the adults talk. Hitoshi guesses that this is one of the few things the school can give to a student without parental consent. He's heard of melatonin before but he never bothered to try to get some. If his foster parents found out then he'd be in trouble but they aren't here right now and Hitoshi can't come to care.
Before they left Recovery Girl checked him out to see if he had any broken ribs. Ojiro's tail got him good but Hitoshi didn't feel off. If anything his ribs were bruised and he's not too worried about that.
--
Later on that day, about an hour Hitoshi plans to sleep, he takes one of the melatonin gummies. He's laying in bed with the big lights off and his LED lights dimmed. Hitoshi lays in the comfiest clothes he has and waits for sleep to take over.
He falls asleep an hour later.
--
The melatonin worked for about 2 weeks before it stopped working. Even after taking the two recommended by Recovery Girl.
He didn't have to worry about it anymore because Aizawa got in touch with his foster parents and explained the situation. Even offered to take Hitoshi to the doctors and to get the medicine.
Surprisingly his parents agreed.
Hitoshi knows it's going to be okay.
