I tossed and turned in my bed that night. How could I sleep when I had to make this decision? Can I still be dauntless or will I have to choose something else? There comes the throbbing in my head again. I rubbed the side of my temple. This was getting frustrating.
I slipped out of bed and put some black yoga pants on. I placed on my sneakers and a sweat shirt. I walked out of my room before even knowing where I was going. As I walked down the paths I thought a lot about my mom. What she had said to me, how could she have known? Was she that gifted? I shake my head. I was on this walk to clear my head, not to make it messier. I hadn't even realized I was next to the chasm railing. It was slippery and wet.
The chasm is a large waterfall like cliff. Separating you from a terrifying river and a watery grave is a thin, metal railing that is always slippery and wet. I shivered. Thinking of all the people who jumped before was terrifying. I wonder if maybe I jumped all of my problems could just disappear. I gripped the railing.
No.
Yes.
No.
Yes. I placed my foot on the slippery bar and swung my leg over. Now both of my feet were on the small sliver of cliff left between me and iminate death.
Think of your family.
Think of you.
Think of your mom.
Thoughts were racing as adrenaline was pumping. I was about to let go of the rail. My muscles were already relaxing. Maybe if I just-
I felt a hand grab my wrist. It was strong and warm. Dry.
"What do you think you're doing?" I recognized this voice. Keith was in all of my classes at school but we never spoke.
"What does it look like?"
"You're so stupid! You can't kill yourself over the aptitude test!" Did he know? Why was he out here? I turned to face him.
"Clearing your thoughts too?" He nodded. Looks like I'm not alone.
"Give me your hand." I placed my hand in his big one. It was strong and have me butterflies just touching him. As he pulled I felt my legs slip beneath me. Both of my hands were yanked out of his as the weight of my body was rugged downward. My hands grabbed the bottom of the railing. I could feel them slipping. Now is the time to panic.
