You knew today had been hard as soon as Will walked in the door.

Jack had called him out on a new case early this morning, and you didn't need him to tell you about the case to know it had drained him.

You couldn't help but resent Jack for making Will look, and even though the two of them said the lives saved were worth it, you almost found it hard to agree. You couldn't tell if Jack didn't see the toll it was taking on your partner, or if he just didn't care enough to notice, but either way it didn't matter, because you noticed. You cared.

You and Will had spent most of the evening together with your pack, sitting on the porch throwing their toys as you watched the sun go down, before having dinner. It didn't take a trained professional like Dr. Lecter to tell that he was tense, with his clenched jaw, tense shoulders and brief answers to any inquiries about his day.

When you cleared the dishes, you saw him start to come to help you but with a gentle reassurance that you were fine, you pressed a glass with two fingers of whiskey into his hand.

"Go on, go sit. I've got this."

The ghost of a smile turned the corners of his lips, before he pressed them to your forehead with a whispered thanks.

Standing in the kitchen a few moments later, you could see his far away stare as he sat to one side of your sofa. The fireplace crackled before him, and you had to turn towards the dishes as your hearted ached for him. It hurt, seeing him like this, and you knew he wouldn't open up to you about any of what was bothering him if he could help it.

The repetitive motions of cleaning took your mind off of it all for a short time, before you headed into the living room, drink in hand, with Buster following and hoping for a few extra treats.

You reached to select a vinyl from your collection, and you waited before him with an outstretched hand as the music began to play.

   When you're weary
   Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
   I'll dry them all

He gazed at your hand for a moment, before reaching up and taking it gently.
He stood and immediately pulled you into his arms, with one hand on your waist, the other tight around your torso, as if he were afraid you'd  disappear if he didn't keep you close enough.

   I'm on your side
   Oh, when times get rough

Your arms went over the profilers shoulders, letting your head rest on his chest, the two of you swaying with the melody as your hearts beat in sync.

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

You stood together like this for a while, simply breathing and swaying as the song continued playing and the fire continued to burn. The dogs slept close to your feet, and the sounds of the night around you kept you both grounded, reminding Will that he was here with you, and that things were going to be okay.
