Y'all liked the last chapter so much, I'm kinda shocked. I was feeling iffy about it lol.

Also, kinda curious, how many of y'all came from my other books, and how many of y'all are new to my books? If you're new, what do you think of my writing so far? If you're an og, do y'all think all my books are too similar? It's something I've been worrying about.

Anywayssss... lemme know what y'all think about this chapter!

Enjoy!

I frowned at the dashboard, hating the whole car. Why did it have to work? Why couldn't it break down and make us miss the entire day? Stupid car.

"Emerson, the car didn't do anything to you. Stop glaring at it," Lukas chuckled.

I side-eyed him. How dare he laugh at such  serious offense? Traitor. I huffed, slouching down in my seat. "Assignment day is stupid."

Lukas hummed. "Is it?"

"Yes."

"Even if we missed it today, they'd call us in for make-ups. The government would make sure they go this information. No one goes unassigned a genus," he lectured.

I rolled my eyes. "I know, Lukas. You told me a million times."

"Are you nervous about it?" He asked.

"Of course not," I scoffed, crossing my arms over my chest.

We slowed to a stop as a red light turned yellow, and Lukas looked at me from his seat. I purposefully avoided eye contact, trying to ignore is gaze piercing into me.

But my skin couldn't take the prickling sensation, and I blurted out, "I am."

He sat back. "Thought so. What is there to be nervous about?"

"Are you serious?" I asked incredulously. "Not only does your genus decide what careers you succeed in, but also your entire future! Like partners, friends, living arrangements, diets... everything."

"Is there one you're specifically worried about getting?" He questioned cautiously. I winced as he hit the nail on the head.

After a moment of silence, I finally answered, "I don't want to be a sub. At all."

He didn't reply to that, and I peeked over at him to see him looking at me with a funny expression.

I raised a brow. "What?"

The light turned green, and he snapped out of whatever daze he was in to press the gas and move forward. "Nothing."

"No, not nothing. You had a look just now. What is it?" I pressed.

But he stayed stubborn and shook his head. "It was seriously nothing. Just... shocked you were worried about that."

I knew that wasn't it. But I didn't have time to question him further as we pulled into the campus visitor parking lot.

"Are you sure we can't just skip it?" I had to double, triple, quadruple check as he pulled into an open parking space.

Lukas gave me an encouraging smile, turning off the ignition and picking up his fob. "It'll be okay Emerson. Come on."

He reached over and unclicked my seatbelt.

I didn't move.

He opened his door and got out.

I didn't move.

He shut his door.

I watched him walk around the car.
