The Spark

The wind was but a gentle breeze on that day. The sky was cloudy, and it's blues were painted a yellow-ish hue from the warm kiss of the morning.

It was yet another day of endless searching. Determination burned inside her delicate shell, eager to fulfill what she believed was her destiny. Which was to find the keeper of her Light, so that they may wield it against the enemies of humanity.

Her single teal eye stared down at the wasteland laid out before her. The ancient ruins of the city stood tall in the distance, having witnessed the horrors of the Collapse. Only this time, she didn't came here to study it's history, and get lost in it's gruesome details. No. She came here for one thing alone; for her Guardian. With purpose in her every move, the Ghost glided through the city with minimal effort.

She scanned many remains in the early hours, but none of the candidates met her admittedly high expectations. "Nope. Not you." Her voice echoed with a sigh in the end. Another fruitless search. A soft teal light retreated into her single eye, before moving past the skeletal remains straight onto the next one. "Sorry, but no." The strings of her Light retreated, and the backside of her shell spun around her eye. "Ah. No thank you." The little light wasn't going to settle for anything less than her soulmate. And so she carried on.

As the sky was turning to a lighter, pinkish-yellow hue to reveal the morning, she heard some chatter in the area. A quick scan of her surroundings revealed a group of Fallen approaching on her radar. Our little light knew that from this point forward, she has to be even more careful than before.

Following her own strict rules of caution, the Ghost drifted through the belly of a mangled building, dodging and going around it's metal guts spilled everywhere. Her eye gave no more than a second of attention to the wires hanging from above. From the darkness she emerged with proper caution, heading down the street in a hurry.

The Ghost followed the guidance the path of death has given her. A couple of hours later, still nothing...there was no spark.

She was thinking; maybe she should just head back to the Cosmodrome to look. Perhaps looking this high up north was a waste of time after all. A sigh escaped her. As she turned to leave, something caught her attention.
From the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of a ship's wreckage on the hillside. It seemed to have been broken in half, many of it's contents spilled out on the grass. It was clearly overgrown and the metals were slowly eaten away by rust.

Unable to resist the urge, she gave in to her curiousity. She closed all distance there was in a matter of seconds, as if she were a bullet fired from a gun.

Upon closer inspection, she quickly realised that something truly horrible must've happened in here, judging by the layout of everything. 'Just...what in the hell happened here?' It was the only thought that came to mind. It was a sight she was used to by now, but...no matter how many times she faced it, it never failed to send a shiver into her core. All gory details aside, an interesting fact her scans revealed, was that these strange giants laying around were anything but human. 'It must've been a massacre...' Her eye followed the trail of their remains in the grass, the place where this alien crew was laid to rest for eternity.

She approached the broken ship itself, and right at the door, laid several more bodies. Well...what was left of them anyways. Quickly attaching her strings of Light to one of them, she felt something. It was a spark. The Spark.

The Ghost immediatelly stopped doing whatever ideas she wished to perform, recoiling with a shocked gasp of revelation as it dawned on her; she has found The One. She knew it the moment her Light caressed their soul. The Ghost felt drawn to their Light, compelling her to reach deeper.

She saw a very blurry vision of the bravery and devotion this being demonstrated, but what solidified it even more was the sacrifice this creature has made...she experienced their feelings with great intensity. She felt the fear. His undeniable devotion and anger. The burning desire to protect something they held dear. Something so important, this alien willingly sacrificed itself for. But as with all fine candidates, they too eventually met their tragic end. In the doorframe was the body; slumped over to it's left with their back against the ancient black metal. Only bones remained, some vines hugging them firmly. It was probably what held it in place.

The Ghost has found the right person, but...they were an alien. A species so mysterious, nobody knew anything of. For a minute she hung still in the air. Thinking. Considering.

She then stared out into the distance for but a moment, watching the sun's warm embrace stretch out on the land. 'This is my chance, right?' She thought to herself. She was onto something. It was anyone's guess as to what exactly. 'We only ever get one shot at this, don't we?'

She turned back to look at the creature's skull, to four holes on it where she assumed were once two pairs of eyes. 'But...he's not human.' The child of the Traveler sighed. More silence followed. She had to think about every possibility. This decision would change everything...it wouldn't only alter her own destiny, but this mere mortal's too. Was it wrong to revive a non-human? She felt...conflicted, somehow.

'Ugh...you know what?' She snapped at herself, getting slightly frustrated by her own indecisiveness. 'All I ever do is think! It's about time I make a change. And now?' Her single eye narrowed, and determination burned inside her core as she approached the creature. 'You're coming with me, buddy.' Her intentions were clear this time. Without a shadow of a doubt; she's going to raise her chosen. 'I've never been more sure about anything my whole life. I know that you're the one...'

She stopped mid-air above the corpse of her chosen, and made sure that she was all alone. She had to, because of what she was about to do will put her in a very vulnerable position. 'Right. Here goes nothing.' Slowly, the Ghost opened her shell, revealing a very delicate core underneath it. Eager to finally share this glorious fresh breath and being with someone, she concentrated her Light to pull back but a single soul from beyond the grave. She imbued it with the gift of Light, breathing new life into the corpse beneath her. She brought them back in seemingly perfect condition, mending flesh and bone down to the tiniest of atoms.

It was done. The bond has been made. They now share a connection. A partnership. She was now his Ghost, and he was now her Guardian. The Ghost moved back a few feet from the new light, observing them with anxiety and tremendous joy inside her core. Only if she had a face to display it all, she'd be smiling ear to ear right now. She couldn't wait to get to know this being. And even though she had no idea of what the future may hold, she knew this; It's going to be a wild ride.
