Her head was spinning and she needed a minute to catch her breath before she tried again. Taking full advantage of Jack's dismissal, Suzie very slowly lifted her head enough to see out of the window.
There was a bridge up a head.
Wait, if she could see...where did the helicopter go?
Jack seemed to slow down a little as the car slipped along, and she felt him easing toward the right. But they weren't going into the snow.
An EXIT.
Before, Jack said he was going to an isolated cabin somewhere.
Lord only knew what he had stashed there for such an eventuality. Guns? Explosives? Another fire?
Suzie was so frightened before, that she didn't realize what was going on until it was too late to help Sheila. Later, when she first saw the flames, she hoped that Sheila escaped. But Jack just confessed that he killed Sheila in that fire.
The police had tried to run Jack off the road, first with the cruiser, then with the helicopter.
She knew this wasn't some action-adventure movie but still, surely there were ways to stop Jack. Why weren't they shooting or doing something more drastic to stop him?
Because she was in the car.
She had to stop him.
She wanted to go home.
To watch her little boy grow up.
To tell Rowdy...
But she had to do this.
She had to stop Jack.
The car was climbing. She felt the tires slip and the car slide back as much as it climbed up. The helicopter must have made a mess of the road.
And bridges were notorious for icing over in winter.
"Almost there." Jack mumbled.
Suzie felt her lips curl in a smile. Jack was so focused on driving that he dismissed her. He assumed she was still out cold and he was free to make his escape.
"Oh no you don't!" Suzie growled as she twisted, unclicking Jack's seatbelt with one hand as she pushed his shoulder hard.
"Bitch!" He growled, trying to backhand her.
Suzie was ready for the blow and turned, taking the blow in her shoulder instead of her jaw. Still, she let herself fall back against the door. She felt the hand grip pressing into her back and grunted.
I'm sorry Brody. I love you.
Suzie unlatched her buckle and twisted on the seat, bringing her feet up and kicking against Jack's side with all of her might.
He slammed in to the door and hit his head with a grunt as the car jerked left.
"How does it feel?" Suzie's satisfaction was short-lived as Jack jerked the car hard right, slamming her into the door again.
Twisting onto the seat, she scrambled to put her belt on as the car swerved and she heard the grinding of metal as the car was pressed into the railing while Jack tried to find purchase to get back onto the road.
Click.
Suzie lunged and grabbed the steering wheel again. This time, the car pushed through the railing and the bent metal acted as a ramp, launching them into the air. Her stomach went up as she screamed and raised her arms across her face.
