Reticent

The Unknown

Sundays were always lazy. For me at least. 

I'd stick to my little routine of waking up in time to grab breakfast and watch the sunset with my mom and sister, Hazel, as we talked about our week. From there, it lead to a bit of straightening up which inevitably lead to a dance party when my sister decided to play Paramore full blast in our room. As much as I hated to be interrupted, I didn't mind it. It was our thing. 

But here I stood, one big suitcase gripped firmly in one hand and focused on the asylum like building that stood tall with all its superiority. 

I wish I could've seen it coming, maybe find a way to get out of it, but it's hard to stop something without knowing the cause. You can't change the unknown. 

My other hand was clenched tightly in the warmth of my sisters. Eyes teary and bottom lip quivering, telling me the waterworks were to visit soon again. 

"Mom?" 

Her voice was barely a whisper but it was heard all the same. My mom didn't reply but her eyes closed gently, anticipating what was to come. 

"Hey." I gripped her hand a little harder, though I hardly doubt it was possible. "It's fine...I'll be okay." I forced what I hoped looked like a comforting smile for the sake of my sister. 

"Miss. Pine." An english accent called. 

My head snapped forward but I quickly glanced back and sent one last smile to Hazel before releasing her hand and stepping closer to the woman whose firm gaze was set on me. 

"This way." She ordered as she turned on her heel and marched into the building that would now be known as my school.

The inside wasn't how I imagined it. In all honesty I came in expecting jail cells and stone brick walls but much to my dismay is was pretty...decent.

It was no paradise, but it wasn't bad. I took in the intricate and surely pricey paintings that hung on the tan speckled walls as we walked by.

"Ms. Harper!" Someone called frantically  "You're late for a meeting!" I looked to the brunette lady approaching us, hair in a neat bun and heels clicking away.

"Bloody hell." She muttered before cutting her muddy brown eyes to me. "Please take Miss. Pine to her room." She ordered  "22B"

"Got it." She brunette piped as Ms. Harper left. She looked to me and gave me a bright smile. "You must be Iris?"

I nodded slowly, shifting my cold gray eyes from hers.

"I'm Mrs. Oliver, but you can call me Tess." She introduced. "Follow me."

The school was pretty big and after what felt like an eternity of walking, or maybe it only felt long with Tess constantly talking, we finally reached the dorms.

"Okay." She stepped into the elevator and pressed the '2' button before leaning against the wall. "Floors are assigned by letter and the letters determine the level. There's five levels: A,B,C,D and E. Dorm wandering cuts off at 10, no boys in your dorm past 7, which for the record is pretty stupid, and lights out by 11."

I nodded immediately after though I doubt I'd remember any of that nor did I think I would need to. The elevator jolted to a stop and the doors dinged open. In the blink of an eye Tess was out of the elevator and halfway down the hall.

How does she walk so fast in those skyscrapers!?

Please slip just once. Give me a chance to catch my breath.

"Here we are!" she spun around to look at me, lingering still around 5 doors behind. She chuckled slightly and handed me a key when I finally reached the door.

"I believe your roommate is Bethany Walsh but she should be in class so that gives you some time to get comfy." She smiled "I hope I didn't talk your ears off too much sweetie."

I forced a dry laugh that came out much more sarcastic than I intended it to but she brushed it off all the same.

"The RA office is the main floor so if you need anything do not hesitate to stop by." She rested a properly manicured hand on my shoulder "and welcome to StoneBrook Prep."

Hey!

So this chapter is pretty short, only about 700 and something words since it's just kinda the intro. Chapters will get longer as we get more into the story :)

Oh and i'm not sure if StoneBrook is actually a school, just the first thing that came to mind haha but next update should be up soon!
