Prologue

I never thought of death as something to be feared. At times, I sometimes even wanted it to come sooner. But as I lay there on the floor, blood dripping down my face, I couldn't help but ask myself why? Why did it have to come so soon, at only eighteen years old? I didn't have an answer. I don't think anyone had an answer for death. Most of the time it was something that happened naturally, because of old age. Other times, because of war and anger. But this wasn't like either of them.....I was his prey.......

Chapter One- The New Kid

"Hey Kendra! I've been looking for you all morning. Where have you been?" Max said with a worried look on his face.

"Huh?" I replied, coming out of my daydreams.

Max was my best friend and also my colleague. We both worked for the school newspaper at Sherwood High. It was a ratty old public school in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

"Oh don't give me that look!" he said with a grin on his olive toned face. " I see you've found another way to sharpen your personality." He said eyeing my purple coloured hair.

"Ya, I've decided that blue isn't me, so I went purple" I replied to his uneasy glance.

"Well, I personally find that purple makes your eyes look bland" He smirked.

I hit him with my science book. "What are you my hair guru!?" I said seething.

"Chillax! I was only joking!" I gave him an honest smile. "That's better. Now what was I saying? Oh yeah! I found a perfect story for the press that's sure to sell!"

"What is it?" I asked cautiously. The last time he found a "perfect story".....well long story short he ended up suspended from school for two weeks.

"Well" he said getting excited, "It's about this psychopathic guy that runs around New York only in his underwear while holding a machetee, all the while ranting about how cats are always walking on his lawn." he ended with a big smile, proud of himself for finding the story.

Truthfully, I never understood why Max joined the school newspaper anyway. It wasn't even like he was good at the job. But I guess I should be glad that he joined, otherwise I would've never met my best friend.

"Ah, I see." he looked at me seriously, "My story is so good that you're at a loss for words."

At that I started cracking up with laughter. I didn't even know why I found that so funny, but it was one of those moments that you laugh even though there's nothing meant to be actually funny.

He started laughing with me. To complete strangers, we would look like two crazy teens noise polluting the halls with our insane laughter.

When we started calming down, Max pulled my arm and tugged me to the end of the hall, because the bell had rung.

As we walked to homeroom, I saw a group of cheerleaders crowding the hall. Standing in the midst of them was the head cheerleader Lauren Dale. She was the typical cheerleader type. Tall, skinny, blonde, and big boobs. I couldn't even remeber how many times she had dropped a slushie on me, or picked on me because of my haircolor.

Putting his arm around her was her boyfriend, and also head quarterback, Nick Reed. He was the type of guy that would ask you out and then dump you if you weren't up to his "standards". He had brown eyes that matched his light colored hair. He was fit, obviously from all the football he played, and had a light tan from going to practice.

I silently walked toward my classroom, careful not to make eye contact. Surprisingly, they didn't even acknowledge my prescence.

Well that's weird, I thought to myself.

When I entered my homeroom, I went up to Ms.Fields to get my schedule. Great, I thought, History first period.

When the bell rang, I braced myself for a horrid hour of pure boring I tried to stop myself from grumbling to myself, all the way until the third floor, to no avail.

When i got to class, i sat myself nearest to the door, so I could make a quick escape when period one was over.

The teacher, Mr. Modnar, started taking attendance, when all of a sudden, there was a knoch at the door. "Come in" he said, annoyed at the interruption.

"I am sorry that I am so late, Mr. Modnar." a boy said with a heavy accent I couldn't indentify.

He was very lean and looked to be about six foot three. He had straight black hair that ended at the tip of his earlobes. It was striking against his pale face. He had unusually black eyes that looked haunted by the past. He was wearing all black and had a loosefitting leather jacket on. As he smiled at the teacher you could see his perfect teeth, quite a contrast to his crooked nose.

I was surprised the teacher hadn't given him a detention for being late. But it seemed he just melted at the easy smile the boy gave him. I couldn't blame him. For some reason my heart contracted as I saw him turn towards me and look my way. It was as if I knew him from somwhere. He was something like a dream.

The teacher pointed to the only seat available: the one next to mine.
