"What changed yo' mind?" Fezco asked, "Thought you said you wasn't gonna come?" He asked again, taking a long drag from the blunt held carefully between his fingers.
Valentina shrugged, slightly uncomfortable. "I don't know, just, felt like it."
In all honesty, Valentina didn't know why she was there either. It was some lame high school party full of lame high schoolers, all the music that was being played was too, horribly lame. The atmosphere was dead and the only people seeming to have a good time were the people higher than Mount Everest. Secretly, Valentina wished she could be stoned right now - Helen was working her up, messing both her and Beth about, completely ruining the mood for the entire night, and all she needed was her moments of serenity and peace.
As if he read her mind, Fezco offered her the burning blunt. "You seemed worked up, Val, wanna hit?"
Nodding gratefully, Valentina took a long drag from the joint, which was still between his fingers. This was probably the closest they had ever been - Valentina refused near Fezco last year, cause there was moments he looked like a rabid dog, however, since the Summer sauntered along, he most certainly tidied himself up, nobody could deny it, especially Valentina.
"So Vally, where was you at this Summer? Felt like I didn't see you once." Fezco drawled, eyes trained on the girl beside him. He shifted slightly in his seat, body facing fully towards her to show he was paying his fullest attention.
"I went to New York with my step-mom for the most of it, the rest spent by the pool at home. Didn't really feel like going out and seeing people, just, minding my own business in peace." Valentina told him, it was the truth - partially. Her father was adamant she left East Highland for some time, claiming the air was toxic and fusing with the chemicals in her brain due to all the recent drug activity arising. Her father may be rich, but he was extremely fucking stupid. So her step-mom treated her to a trip to New York, of course bringing a credit card or two of her father's to spend the majority of the months shopping.
"I like that, minding yo' own business... but somehow you know everythin' 'bout everyone." Fezco chuckled, surprised to hear Valentina laughing along with him.
"You just gotta pay attention and have connections," Valentina shrugged, "Like Lexi Howard for example, she may not have the connections but she definitely has the attention span, and trust me when I say this, with all the dirty info she's picked up over the years, she better do something phenomenal with it."
"Ain't that Rue's friend?" Fezco asked, furrowing his brows at the familiar name.
"Mhm.." Valentina nodded quietly, "Where is Rue? I haven't seen her since, y'know, the OD."
"She chillin', not sober though." Valentina simply nodded. Once she heard about Rue's overdose she really was worried sick about the younger girl. Valentina knew Rue, acquaintances you could say. Valentina used to babysit Rue when she was just a little girl, and although it was extremely difficult at the start, Rue began to trust Valentina and ease into her presence. Once Rue had matured and was able to look after herself, Valentina began babysitting Gia - who she was certainly closer with, she had only stopped babysitting her around two years ago. Valentina and Rue trusted each other, their friendship had certainly fallen when Valentina's babysitting days were over, but they stayed civil and could have comfortable conversations with each other when meeting at parties.
"Oh my God," Fezco's attention was alerted once again when Valentina spoke up slowly, her eyes darting around the patio as if in search for someone.
"You good?" His question and concern went underway when he saw Beth, someone he really didn't know yet knew of, storm over with a menacing grin.
"Thank you for the weed Fez, I'll maybe see ya' later." And with that, the two girls took off hand in hand to the dance floor. Fez counted back to his conversations with mutual friends of Valentina, racking his brain for any context to her sudden take off when he remember talking to Helen, who he didn't really appeal off, who said "If You Seek Amy" by Britney Spears was the girls' anthem, and how they had a promise that if they ever heard it being played at a party, they'd drop whatever they were doing to dance together; "It's to honour Britney!" Helen had said with a proud grin.
Rue had came to sit with him, rambling on about whatever as she was high out of his mind, but Fezco remained unbothered to his sister, only focusing on the dancing angel in the middle of the room. Instinctively, his eyes flickered to the college guy that was eyeing Valentina up and down, who then began to make his way over to her, hands gently on her hips as they danced without a care in the world.
Fezco knew he wasn't allowed to feel jealous, he refused to because he would do the exact same thing if one; he wasn't as high as a kite and could move a limb, and two; had the over-bearing confidence to even talk to Valentina in any other way than friendly.
"Dude, just - ask her out!" Rue groaned, dragging her hands down her face, peaking through her fingers to see Fez shaking his head.
"Nah, man." Fezco sighed deeply, taking another hit. "I been trying for fuckin' years, she jus' isn't interested."
"Okay Fez," Rue shook his shoulders to gain his full attention, "I swear to God, and I'm sorry for saying the Lord's name in vain, but I swear to God that Valentina is like, warming up to you, you can't give up now!" Fezco merely furrowed his brows. "Okay, listen to this, since when did Valentina Armani willingly have a conversation with you, completely fine and sober? Never." Rue explained, dragging out the 'er', "She would've got up and walked away, don't say she was embarrassed 'cause we both knew she has more confidence than Lana Del Rey on SNL and an ego bigger than Kanye's - so she wanted to speak to you."
Maybe it was his high mind and clouded vision, but Fezco could've sworn he saw and felt Valentina's gaze linger on him, despite the money-full man grinding onto her hips. Rue's words and Valentina's looks had now got his mind racing - if he tried, could Fezco actually have a chance with the one and only Valentina Armani?
