I ran. Ran as fast as I could. Legs taking long strides, arms pumping at my sides. I ran until the toe of my shoe caught something. I fell forward. The world felt like it slowed down and I put my hands out to catch myself. Then I remembered. Diablo. Before I face planted, I twisted so I'd land on either my side or my back.
My chest tightened and my breaths came out in sputters. I gasped for air, but it felt like air was only escaping, not entering. I felt like a fish out of water. After about a minute, air returned to my lungs and I could take staggered breaths. I watched my chest rise and fall, up, down, up, down.
I stared up at the sky, clouds blocking the view of the stars. The sky looked almost black, dotted with the occasional star or two.
After a few seconds, I groaned and slowly rolled to my side.
"Dee?" I picked up my bag and lifted the flap to check on my friend.
Hiss.
"Yeah yeah, I'm sorry. It was a bumpy ride for me too," I answered. At least Dee felt good enough to still sass me.
Hiss hisssss.
"I'm asking myself that too. I guess we'll just walk down the sidewalk until we find a place. We could always sleep in the woods! We could camp out!"
Hisssssss.
"How dare you." I give Diablo a pouty look and start following the road. "I could survive a night in there."
Hissss.
"I'm ignoring you now."
Hiss.
I listened to the sound of crickets chirping. Ignoring Dee was probably a bad call. The silence let my mind wander. Eventually, different scenarios ran through my head. Most were bad. One or two were fantasies that I knew wouldn't become reality.
"Dee, do you think we should go back?" I ask, looking down at the little pal on my arm.
Hisssssssss.
"It's been longer than three minutes... I think."
Hisssss.
"Whatever. Forget I asked."
Going back to silence, I came to an intersection. The sign read Charring Cross Road. There was a short building on the corner. It looked abandoned, and I was tired.
"Dee," I whispered. "I've found us a place to stay."
Hisssss.
"I don't think anyone will mind if we sleep in a rundown building for one night."
If snakes could shrug, I swear Diablo would have. Quickening my pace, I set a hand on the knob and swing the door open to find that the lights were on. I swear when we were outside, the windows were dark.
Confused, I closed the door and looked through the windows. The interior was similar, but it was dark inside.
"Dee? Am I tripping?"
Hiss.
"I didn't mean literally tripping and falling."
Hissss.
"I'm not sure."
Hisssssssssss.
"No, I am not high!"
Diablo gave me a strange look and I opened the door again, looking inside through the door then through the window.
"Excuse me?" someone interrupts.
