rengoku appeared to lose his spark, being quiet instead of his usual flamboyant and loud self. seeing your breathing was the only form of reassurance to him, your chest going up and down in a rhythmic pattern.

it was after the mission on the mugen train, you took a heavy hit for rengoku despite knowing you were physically weaker than the rest.

it led to a coma thats been ongoing for 2 weeks, but also to rengoku being able to survive.

"apologies, my dearest. i'd never expect for you to.." he tried to apologize or to mutter out anything, but just like his previous attempts, it led back to sobs.

rengoku knew it was his fault, that he didnt notice the attack coming or being able to save you from it, you were in pain and bled from many scars. and yet you could still smile and tell him to keep fighting.

"its a habit i picked up from you, your positive energy has always been something thats inspired me!" rengoku remembered you saying, aswell as him being slightly flustered as he would never expect someone to say something like this.

yet now you were unable to utter anything, stuck in a hospital bed as rengoku never left your side.

the other hashiras worried for him, they all knew how much rengoku loved you, how he treasured you more than a priceless gem.

they would try to bring him food but there wouldnt be a single bite of it, rengoku felt like he didnt deserve any kindness until you would wake up.

"i must.. return to my duties now. the second you wake up, i'll be here faster than lightning" rengoku murmured, gently pressing a kiss on your lips as he stood up.

"rest well, love" rengoku said to finish, but as he was turning the knob of your door, he heard a gentle whisper.

"kyo.. ju.." the voice tried to say and he was quick to return to your side, you were trying to say his name.

"hey.. its okay, dont stress yourself any further.." he reassured you, intertwining hands as he missed your warmth. you turned your head and felt tears forming in your eyes, he was alive, thats all that mattered.

as you both had an emotional moment, tears and all, tengen so happened to want to check on you.

"they're awake! someone call the doctor!" he'd yell and you were happy to finally hear their voices again.

sanemi wasnt allowed in the room incase he would have some kind of violent outburst when he'd see you.. but the others that were free came by to thank you for your bravery and protecting rengoku.

"you'll have to stay in bed for a few more days, but you'll recover quickly. its good to have you back, y/n" the doctor spoke, bowing her head as she turned to give you and your friends privacy.

first it was mitsuri to speak. "oh oh! oh my lovely y/n! i cant believe you had gotten hurt, that big idiot rengoku let you get injured like this!" she cried out. throwing herself onto you and being cautious of not hurting you.

"ehe.. lets not start throwing names of whos fault it was.." you laughed nervously but you knew that mitsuri was worried, she did see you like a sibling and you saw her as a sister.

next was tengen, it was new of him to not do something flamboyantly or anything of the sort. he only smiled to see you recovering.

muichiro also said nothing, but he had brought you many gifts (with the help of mitsuri of course)

and the rest came by later to say their congratulations.

now the day was ending, leaving you and rengoku alone in the hospital room.

"they're all the same as ever.. arent they, kyojuro?" you turned to him but he was only staring at you, a soft smile on his face as rengoku admired you.

"i missed you so much, you know? i feared that one day you would just.. die. and i would have too many words to say and not enough time.." he said with a brittle voice, tears almost escaping his eyes as you placed a hand on his cheek.

"well.. now im here. so tell me everything" you say with a smile, one bright enough to impress even the flame hashira. "yes, of course. anything for you."
