It was a cold night as the little girl crawled out onto the fire escape. She could still hear the two adults fighting inside the apartment. Gotham was starting was to turn into a snowy, cold mess. It was a little bit after midnight and the lunatics have yet to come out. The streets were empty since the sun set a long time ago. The little girl was shaking due to the cold and the quiet crying she had been doing. She hated late nights when the man would get drunk and start fights. Her parents thought that she was asleep, but it was hard to sleep through the fighting. It wasn't necessarily fighting, it was just one person yelling at the other. Her mom never yelled at the man, just stood there taking it. She hated feeling so helpless.
There was a figure watching her. There was no crime for the moment so he decided to take a break on the roof top when he saw the little girl crawl out her window. He saw her crying and wanted to make sure she was okay. She reminded him of the little boy he had at home. They looked close to the same age, maybe a couple years apart. The man sighed and dropped down onto the highest fire escape platform. The little girl jumped up in fear and tried to scramble back into her window. The masked figure glided down to her platform before sitting in the far corner, putting as much distance between him and the child as he could. He knew he could be intimidating, that was the whole point he was trying to get across. The little girl tried to scramble back to her room. "Wait."
The little girl stopped. She knew that voice. Or at least heard the distribution of it. It was Batman. Personally, Batman was her favorite hero. It was the most realistic superhero that she could become and he put away horrible people like the man in her kitchen. Although, she was a bit mad at him for not locking up the monster in her life. But she still had hope that he would locked up for good or something worse. She turned around to see the figure standing in the corner. The figure that stood in the corner loomed over her, but that didn't scare her. He was hopefully here to help.
"What are you doing out there?"
The girl shrugged. "They're fighting."
"It's not safe out here." The masked figure scolded.
"I know." The little girl looked down in shame. She got in trouble by her favorite superhero of all time. How embarrassing was that.
"What's your name?"
"Percy." The little girl answered.
The man wasn't one for emotions. So he just sat down and hoped that would be enough. The man dug around in his belt for a little snack. Thankfully, Alfred had just restocked his snacks so he had a candy bar. He opened it up and broke off a small piece. "You want some?"
The little girl sat down next to him and held her hand out. Her mom told her no more sweets, but this is a once and a life time opportunity. Surely she would understand. How many people get offered chocolate by the Batman? "Thanks."
They sat in silence, eating their chocolate together. Batman wasn't one for words and the little girl was too shell shocked to form a sentence. They quietly finished their chocolate and watched the sky. The little girl wondered if this was going to be the last time she would meet Batman. Maybe he would take the monster away and she and her mom could be free.
Batman stood up. Percy jumped up as well, remembering the piece up paper she hung up in her room today. She climbed back out the window, bouncing up and down. She shoved the piece of paper towards him. "Look!"
It was a drawing of Batman and herself. Batman had to stare at it for two seconds to find out what was happening in the photo. "Very good."
"Do you like it? I worked really hard on it!" Percy smiled.
"Yes." Batman nodded. "It's good."
"Thank you." Percy mumbled.
Batman furrowed his eyebrows. "For?"
"Staying so long. But I think other people need you more than I do right now." She mumbled sadly. She didn't want Batman to go, but it would be selfish of her to keep him here when they're so many people that need him more than. People could get hurt because of her.
Batman pat her head. "You're a good kid.""Do I really have to go this?" She groaned. She rarely thought about that moment. Batman didn't make an appearance since that night almost fifteen years ago. Percy tries not to think about it. No one took the monster away and she dealt with him for six years after than. Percy resented Batman for that slightly but got over it when she had bigger problems.
"You don't have to. But I would love you forever if you did." Piper slung her arm over her friends shoulder to spin her around to show her the mirror. "Plus, you look hot as hell."
"Thanks, Pipes." Percy blushed slightly. She was wearing a black dress that slightly floured out past the waist. "But how long will we have to be there."
"At least an hour. But RED might be there so you could catch up with her." Piper offered with a smile. "Plus, if you really, really hate it, we can come back and watch Finding Nemo. Or that documentary you've been wanting to watch."
"And you won't fall asleep halfway through?" Percy asked hopefully.
"I'll supply the snacks." Piper counter offered with a forced smile.
Percy glared at her friend. Did she really want to spend an hour with a bunch of rich people she didn't know. Percy crinkled her nose and stepped back from the stare off. She threw her arms up, exasperated. "Fine. But I get at least five snacks. Plus popcorn."
Piper smirked. "Deal. And I get to do your hair for the gala." Percy didn't even answer, just sitting down in the chair in front of the vanity.
An hour later, the two girls stepped out of the limo together. There was a walkway from the limo drop off to the entry way lined with velvet ropes. On the other side of the ropes, they're were a lot of reporters flashing cameras and screaming questions. Piper's dad walked in front of them, waving to the cameras and basking in the light. Piper offered Percy her arm as they began walking to the manor. Which was huge. Annabeth would have a field day studying the architecture. Percy whispered her comment to Piper who giggled.
"Miss McLean! Miss McLean! Are you two are in a relationship? What do you have to say to people of Gotham about your new relationship?" A reporter almost knocked over the ropes trying to get closer to the girls.
Piper seemed a bit flustered but looked over to the reporter. "No, Percy and I are just friends."
Percy rolled my eyes. She had never saw the purpose of trying to know every little thing about someone famous. It is their life, who cares? "Come on." Percy pulls her friend lightly, trying to get as much space between them as possible. Although Percy and Piper have never talked about their feelings like that to each other, they have both thought about it once or twice before. Percy tried to lighten the mood. "Has my hour timer started?"
"It started the minute we stepped out of the limo." Piper smiled at her friend. Piper was always grateful for Percy. They had been through a lot of stuff together, even after the wars. Percy never failed to make her feel better, and even though people give her a lot of shit for not being the smartest but Percy picks up on a lot of things. She memorizes the small stuff to cheer you up or to avoid in conversations. Who ever ended up with Percy would be a very lucky person. Piper was just glad that they were as good as friends as they were.
"Thank the gods. I'm already tired of all these rich people." Percy lowered her voice as she was surrounded by rich people.
"That's why I was so glad that I would be sent away. Rich people are so annoying." Piper rolled her eyes.
"I'm sorry to hear that." Joined a third voice.
Piper and Percy turned around. Behind them stood Rachel. Her red hair was pulled into a bun on top of her head. She had a green dress that look close to a mermaid dress but less of a pool around her ankles. "What are you doing here?"
"My dad wanted me to go."
"Up holding my part of a deal."
"Have you guys seen Annabeth? I thought she was going to be here." RED asked. She looked around the room.
"I had no idea that she was going to be here." Piper shrugged.
Percy didn't answer since she was scanning the room. Percy hadn't seen Annabeth for a year. They had been meaning to meet up but Annabeth had gotten a job in Metropolis while waiting for an architect job and kind of fell in love with it. And Percy stayed by the west coast, trying to save the coral reefs and climb the ranks of the local aquarium. She wanted to become the vet for the sick animals of the fish in the aquarium already or the fish the people bring in since they were so close to the beach.
"Here," Piper pulled her from the group, "we can look for her on the way to get a drink."
"Alright, I think my dad wants me to meet people anyway, so I'll meet up with you guys later." RED smiled at the girls then bounded off in the other directions.
"Do you want one?" Piper asked, after pulling her in the direction of a waiter she had been tailing.
"Yes, thank you." Percy nodded to the the waiter as he walked off.
"I don't think she's going to appear if you keep staring. I think you're starting to creep people out." Piper nudged the ravenette with her elbow. "You're also going to scare the cute boy who is walking this way."
Percy turned in the direction of said boy. "He looks thirty."
"But the boy he pulling behind is our age." Piper offered. Piper waved at them.
"Don't-you didn't. Please, they all live in Gotham. Even if they aren't spoiled brats, it will never work." Percy started to turn away. "Plus it doesn't seem like he's that interested in me, either."
Piper held out her arm and spun her around. "Then they can be your sugar daddy or something."
"Piper!" Percy glared at her.
"Smile." Piper whispered under her breathe before smiling at the two approaching men. "Hello."
"Hello." The oldest greeted. He offered a hand to both the girls. "I'm Dick Grayson and this is Damian Wayne."
"I'm Piper McLean and this is my good friend Percy Jackson." Piper shook his hand then nudged Percy to the same. Damian didn't offer his hand.
"He's Bruce Wayne's son. I'll pick a different movie." Percy had switched into Ancient Greece so they two men in front of her wouldn't understand.
"Like you said, you live on two different coast. Just be nice to him tonight and you'll never see him again." Piper reasoned. Percy grumbled under her breathe that made Piper giggle. Then Percy smiled sweetly at the two, who were looking at her confused.
Dick decided to ignore the language switch. "What brings you two here?"
"My dad is Tristian McLean, the actor. He normally brings me with him to these things." Piper smiled sweetly. She was always good at these things. Being the daughter of Aphrodite probably helps.
"You do look familiar." Dick nods, but then turns to Percy. "But I don't think I've seen you here."
"No, this is my first time. Piper invited me." Percy tried to give them best smile that she could.
"Oh? Is that so?"
"Yeah, she's in town for the weekend and decided to join." Piper smiled at the two boys.
Damian and Dick shared a look. Damian spoke up for the first time. "Where do you live?"
"I live in California." Percy answered shortly. She looked at the clock over head. It's only been fifteen minutes. She inwardly groaned.
"What do you do?" Damian asked. He narrowed his eyes at her. Damian was never a trusting person, and never one to socialize. But there was a new villain that showed up this weekend and slightly matches her description.
"I work in an aquarium in Half Moon Bay and take care of the coral reefs near there." She smiles. Percy takes pride in her work. Though, no one was surprised when she said she wanted to study marine biology as a major and especially not when she began working at an aquarium.
"She knows too many fish facts." Piper jokingly rolled her eyes.
"You love my fish facts." Percy copied Pipers antics.
"So, when did you met each other?" Dick asked.
"I was seventeen and she was sixteen. We met through my cousin." I informed.
"Dick." A man younger than Dick but still older than the younger three walked up. He had a white streak in his hair, just like Percy's. The man looked between the two girls than the youngest boy. He had a sly smile on his face before roughly hitting Damian in the arm. He whispered something in the youngest ear, which made Damian growl. "Anyway, Dicky, B needs you."
Dick smiled, charmingly. "Excuse me."
Damian goes to follow him but the man stopped him. "Not you, sunshine. Talk to the guests more."
Piper smiled at Percy. "I think I need a refill."
"Piper, you're acting like your mother." Percy glared at the girl. She tried to grip her elbow but the girl easily avoided her friends hand.
Damian looked the girl over for the first time since her attention was else where. He had been told by his brothers that his stare is unnerving and unsettling. She was wearing a black dress with a heart neck line with off the shoulder straps that complement her very tan skin. She had short hair the barely reached her shoulders with a gray stripe that interrupted the center. She had strikingly green eyes that looked like a shining, watery jade jewel. Could this girl even be a evil? Percy didn't look much to him. Sure, she had the athletic build of a swimmer but that doesn't mean that she could have done the things that the thief had done. That means she was just a random rich girl that just wanted to be with him for his money or image.
"So, your Bruce Wayne's son?" Percy asked after walking her friend disappear in the crowd. Percy was definitely keeping Piper awake during the whole documentary.
"Yes, I am." Damian replied shortly.
Percy nodded. Not knowing what to say. All the people around her probably were a lot smart than her, and didn't tumble worlds out every time they talked. Percy didn't want to go on a nervous or distracted ramble in front of the worlds riches man's son. "Do you have any hobbies?"
"You mean beside taking over a business? Not really." Damian scanned the crowd trying to find anyone other than the girl in front of her that would be better to talk to.
"Hmh." Percy nodded. God, did she want to die. She looked at the clock. That whole conversation took roughly five minutes. She tried to look for Piper.
Damian got a text and secretly pulled it out of his coat pocket in case it was something about the basement. It was a text from Dick, telling him to talk to her. Damian looked around the crowd. "Do you have any hobbies?"
"Nothing outside the sea. I basically spend my whole life in the ocean." Percy slightly laughs at that. If only he knew.
"Sounds eventful." Damian honestly couldn't care less about her. But Dick had threatened to got on patrol without if he didn't talk to her.
Percy seemed to get excited at the fact that the one person who was talking to her was somewhat interested. She knew deep down that he didn't care about her but it was the only thing to cure her boredom with. Though, the awkward tension between them did not go away. "Yeah, it is. I could drone on and on about it but I don't want to bore you."
"Hmh." Damian glanced at her.
"I better go find Piper." Percy pursed her lips together. Spoiled brat. She walked away from the man and tried to follow the trail Piper walked five minutes ago. Percy was greatly upset with Piper for leaving her. The older girl found the youngest surrounded by a bunch of boys. "Pipes."
Piper looked at her friend greatfully. "Hey, Perc."
Percy walked up to her, placing a hand on her stomach. "I think we need to go home. I'm not feeling well."
Pipers eyes soften, walking away from the group of boys trying to show off. "Alright, we better get going then. See you later."She called to the boys over her shoulder. "Thanks, I owe you one."
"More than one. You left me alone with Damian. He would not talk to me at all. I tried but he wouldn't even give me his full attention. Suck a dick." Percy rolled her eyes.
Piper laughed. "I'm sorry, I'll make it up to you. I swear."
Percy glared at her. "You better-"
She looked up to see who she had bumped into. "I'm so sorry. I wasn't watching."
"It's fine." Bruce Wayne offered a small smile. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, I'm fine. Again, I am so sorry." Percy shook her head, blushing in embarrassment.
"At least he's nicer than his son." Piper laughed. Percy turned to look at her, trying not to laugh.
"Bruce Wayne." Bruce interrupted them. He offered his hand to shake. Both of the girls followed.
"I'm Piper McLean."
"Percy Jackson." She offered with a smile. Bruce tilted his head, scrunching his eyebrows.
"These are my sons, Dick, Jason, Tim and Damian." He brushed past whatever he was thinking about and gestured to the four boys behind him.
"Hi." Both girls waved. Percy smiled once again. "I'll let you get back to your conversation."
Jason, the one with the white streak in his hair, pulled her arm closer to the circle. She gave a glance at Piper, to make sure she was still there. But Piper glared at Jason and walked forward, keeping herself on edge. "You're fine. We actually need a tie breaker."
"There's five of you." Percy stated, confused.
"Yeah, a five way tie." Dick said, he and Jason seemed to be the only people who were into this. The other three were not so excited.
"Sure." Percy shrugged, hoping it would get her out of there sooner.
"Who is better? Out of the main vigilantes in Gotham?" Jason asked.
"Can I get a refresher course? I don't really live in Gotham." Percy felt like a fool asking.
"The ones that we are voting on are Batman, Nightwing, Red Hood, Red Robin-"
"Like the restaurant?" Percy interrupted. Piper burst out laughing and Percy glared at her, debating on hitting her. Percy could see Tim looking defeated while the others looked amused. Evan Damian smirked.
"And Robin." Jason finished.
"Um, I don't know, I guess I have to meet them."
"So, Batman?" Piper asked.
"I guess." Percy shrugged.
"You've met Batman?" Tim asked. He was trying to fit it into his timeline as to which one of his brothers were Robin and which Robin had she met.
"Yeah, but it was a long time ago." Percy shook her head. The boys glanced at Bruce, trying to gauge his reaction. " I think I was six or seven. I don't really remember it."
Piper poked Percy in the back lightly. Piper knew that Percy just lied, and saw that she was growing uncomfortable and wanted her to know she wasn't alone. Percy never talked about her childhood that much. "Could you guys really not choose between them? I'd choose Nightwing, he has the coolest name."
Dick smiled smugly. "See, I told you I have the best taste."
"Oh, wow. One person say that Nightwing is cool." Jason rolled his eyes.
"His name is kinda cool." Percy smiled.
"Ha!" Dick got a serotonin boost.
"Great. Didn't need to stroke his ego." Damian rolled his eyes.
"Sorry." Percy shrugged sheepishly. Damian eyed her, not as harshly as before. There's no way this girl in front of him was a spoiled brat or a bad person.
"So, what do you do?" Bruce asked. Wondering where the little girl from the fire escaped ended up.
"I'm a marine biologist. I take of fish and make sure they are doing well, getting the right amount of food, stuff like that." Percy smiled.
Piper rolled her eyes at the overachieving girl in front of her. "And when she's not doing that, she's being a wonder person . taking care of local coral reefs and saving the ocean." Percy blushed as the men turned towards her with shocked faces. Damian didn't realize how much she did for the wildlife.
"Maybe we could talk about how Wayne enterprises could help preserve wild life in the ocean?" Bruce perked up an eyebrow.
"Shit-" Percy froze, "I mean, that would be very cool and a real honor."
"Nice going, Seaweed Brain." Piper muttered under her breathe.
Bruce laughed. "I'll have to get your number and make plans."
"Definitely." Percy nodded, glad that a well known man is bringing attention a global problem.
"Perhaps, Damian could take charge of that meeting? He is an advocate of wild life as well." Bruce smiled at his son. Dick smiled at Bruce, then between Percy and Damian.
"Sure, we'd have to make it relatively soon, though. I need to head back to work on Monday." Percy smiled.
Damian looked at the girl. He gave a brute nod. "I could arrange that."
"I look forward to it."
After a couple more minutes of talking the Waynes excused themselves, saying something about the toast. Piper and Percy turn to each other and sigh. They still had thirty minutes till their hour was up, but both of them wanted to leave now. "Any chance your dad will let us leave earlier than an hour?"
"Probably not." Piper sighed. "I think I'm rich peopled out."
"Me too." Percy rolled her eyes. "I'm gonna go get a drink."
"I'll try and talk to my father about leaving soon." Piper walked away.
Percy made her way over to the bar. She didn't drink often but she needed something to get her through the next half hour. After she ordered a Malibu Sunset she stood waiting for Piper. She watched as the lights dimmed and Bruce and his sons walked on stage. She tuned out his speech about how honored they were to have them as their guest. They rambled about stuff she would never understand or care for.
"Hey." A tall man with blonde hair and brown eyes came up to her. He leaned against the bar, facing her. "Malcom Drew."
"Percy Jackson."
"Percy, what an unique name." The man smiled. Percy eyed him. "A beautiful name, nonetheless. Does it mean anything?"
"It's short for Perseus. The only hero in Greek Mythology to get a happy ending." Percy explained. "My mom was manifesting it for me, I guess."
"Does this happy ending include a man?" Malcom asked with a smile, stepping closer and pushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Percy shifted uncomfortably, trying to make an excuse to leave.
"Miss Jackson."
"Damian Wayne." Malcom snapped towards the new man.
"Excuse me, may I have a word with Miss Jackson?" Damian asked Malcom. Who nodded and walked away. Damian held out his hand for a dance.
He led them both to the dance during a slow song. Damian placed a hand on her waist and held her hand. Percy tried to remember the dance she did in the school while picking up the Di Angelo siblings. She gave Damian her hand to hold and placed the other on his shoulder. "Thanks for saving me back there."
"I thought that we could discuss our meeting more." Damian lied through his teeth. Sure, it was one reason but he had her number so he could done that at a later date. The real reason was because he could see how uncomfortable Percy was becoming. The rumors that Damian had heard was that Drew was not the most honorable man.
"I'm not that formal. Maybe but a coffee somewhere?" Percy asked. She shrunk inwardly, she was horrible with this business stuff.
Damian raised an eyebrow. "Do you know any good coffee shops?"
"I believe there's one down on Cherry street." Percy glanced around, seeing that Piper was smirking. She looked like Leo, wiggling her eyebrows like that. The older girl shot her a glare before she and Damian slowly turned away.
"I'll have to ask Drake. He's obsessed with coffee." Damian smiled. He looked down on the girl since he was taller than her by at least half a foot.
"Drake?" She asked.
"My brother. Tim Drake." Damian supplied.
"I have a friend who's obsessed with coffee. But he shouldn't drink it." Percy rambled on a bit. She found Damian intimidating. He was a powerful businessman who was not an open character. He was cold and not talkative. Complete opposites. Plus, Damian was very attractive. He looked like his dad, tall, dark dark, striking light eyes. Although Damian's were a jade jewel that were not easy to read.
"Hmh? Why so?" Damian asked.
"He already acts like he drinks four coffees every second." She laughed to herself.
"I think Drake is the complete opposite." Damian stares at her. There was silence between them.
"I didn't realize you were an advocate for wild life." Percy said. She hated to admit that talking to him has been the best part of her night. Not that there was much to compare it to.
"Yes. I believe this world is ruining itself and killing the animals that live in it." Damian answered. "I'm also a vegetarian."
"Oh, you are?" Percy was shocked. Damian didn't see like the type to be a vegetarian but you should never judge a book by it's cover. Damian nodded. "I think that's cool."
"Hmh." Damian hummed, slightly shocked.
"What?" She asked.
"Most people ask if I have ever tried a certain type of meat." Damian recalled the times that people have said, 'obviously you've never had this.'
"That's sounds annoying. If you change your diet and it's not hurting you or anyone else, who cares?"
"Some people can't grasp that apparently." Damian looked off to the crowd, making sure his father wasn't wondering when he was going to be done.
"I hate when older people think you're wrong just become you're younger than them."
"Me, too." Damian smiled softly. "But sometimes they can be right. I came to live with my father when I was younger and my parents have different morals. I would get in trouble with my father a lot during the first few years."
"I could see that." Percy mumbled, hoping he would get the joke.
He looked down at her. "What's that supposed to me?"
"I'm just saying, you seem like the stubborn kid that was set in his ways." Percy shrugged.
Damian wondered why he had let this girl know so much about him this easily. She reminded him of his mother, but a softer version. The version that keeps him up at night wondering how his life would be had he never been raised by assassins. Who exactly was the girl in front of him?"Oh, god." Percy groans as she takes her high heels off. "I think these things deserve another movie."
Piper rolled her eyes as she slipped off her shoes. "So, I'm up to three movies? Will you unzip me?"
Percy quickly unzipped Pipers dress and turned around for her to do the same. "We'll just have to finish the movies later. I'm tired."
"Yeah, talking to cute boys and beginning a business deal can be quite tiring." Piper nudged me with her elbow after taking the dress back. "Has he texted yet?"
Percy slipped on a pair of old sweatpants and a shirt she stole from her cousin. She pulled out her phone from Piper's clutch to check. "No. I'm not expecting a text at all. I bet the Wayne's make a lot of half-assed deals all the time."
"I'm not to sure. Damian Wayne seemed awfully interested in you." Piper wiggled her eyebrows. "I won't be surprised if you get a text by the end of the night."
"Even if I did get a text back, it probably won't be until the morning. We left the party early, you know those things can last for hours." Percy rolled her eyes. She didn't really want to talk about him. He seemed to only get interested when there was a business deal to be made.
"I don't know. I talked to his brothers while you were dancing and they said he was really enjoying himself." Piper said as she walked into the bathroom.
"He was just being nice." Percy rolled her eyes. She collapsed on the bed behind her. She wouldn't mind if Damian cared for her, or at least liked her enough to be friends. But she shouldn't get her hopes up. But Damian was confusing her. He seemed very two faced. Only interested after she had something to offer.
"His brothers said he was being very nice. And from what I hear about him, he's normally not that talkative. You guys talked for three songs." Piper poked her head in, half of her makeup off. Ever since the end of the war, her love for makeup and looking more girly has slowly increased. But she still liked to just wear whatever she wants, as well. "Take off your makeup before you get it all over my bed."
"Sorry." Percy got up and followed her to the bathroom.
They got their makeup off and got their snacks, blankets and pillows and trailed into their home movie theater. They decided on Level 16 on Netflix. About halfway through Percy's phone vibrated. It was a text from an unknown number.
'Hello, hopefully I am reaching Percy Jackson. This is Damian Wayne. Sorry the late text but I was wondering if our business meeting could take place at the coffee place down on cherry street at noon?'
"Is that lover boy?" Piper asked, half asleep.
"It's Damian. Could I barrow some nice clothes tomorrow? I didn't really pack for a business meeting."
"Sure, you can look through my closet tomorrow." Piper mumbled.
Percy sent a quick reply before going back to her movie. After burring herself in her covers she came to a realization. "I could call him D. W.. Like from Arthur."5225 words
