Rain descended from the skies — the trickle transforming to a downpour almost immediately, turning the streets into reflective puddles that reflected the kaleidoscope of city lights.
"Great." I muttered under my breath, annoyed. The one day I forgot to bring my damn umbrella, it rained.
I stood near the entrance of a café adjacent to the university I was working at. I decided to buy coffee to warm me up since it was so cold in my office even with the AC turned off, but now I'm starting to think that I should've just let my ass freeze to death.
I contemplated running, if I ran fast enough maybe I won't be as soaked, but then again, I could slip and fall on my ass and that would be embarrassing.
Feeling defeated, I sighed and decided to wait it out. A couple of minutes passed by and the rain did not show any signs of repose. Irritated, I kept checking my watch again and again; passers-by came and went, some had sought shelter inside the café, leaving their umbrellas at the entrance. I had half a mind to take it, but ultimately stood against it.
Just as a slew of profanities spilled out of me, I caught a burst of color in my peripheral vision; a rather bright pink umbrella stopping beside me.
"Here, take this. I'm not in a hurry, but you look like you are." The stranger offered, and if I had to bet, she would have a sympathetic smile plastered on her face, but I didn't look up.
"I don't need your help." I retorted sharply.
"Okay, suit yourself." She replied noncommittally. "Sungit," she murmured.
I finally looked up, and when I meant up, I meant up. Jesus Christ, she was tall. "What did you say?!"
She smiled, ngunit alam kong plastik 'yon. "I said, masungit ka. Ikaw na nga 'tong tinutulungan." Sagot niya.
"I already said I don't need your help." I gritted my teeth.
"Oh eh 'di hindi nga po. 'Di ka naman pinipilit, eh." Nakangusong sabi niya.
"Then why do you think it's okay to have a follow-up comment? That was uncalled for." I tacked on. This kid had some audacity.
"Eh sa masungit ka naman po talaga."
"Did I make comments about how you're wearing shades in the evening? 'Di ba hindi? It's called minding my own business. You should try it sometimes."
