LIANA
The shots echo through the room, the sound bouncing off the walls, making the whole situation more intense. Colton still holds me tight against him, and his soft groans beneath my right ear makes me shudder as I try so hard to focus on the target.
The shooting is alright enough, but the recoil makes my forearms hurt from resisting. I release a shuddering breath as I pull the trigger again, and it just clicks.
Just as Colton's chest vibrates against my back with a chuckle, I also hear laughter from around the room. My arms are trembling, and I sink back against the safe hardness I find behind me as I lower my hands, and I let the gun go, letting it rest on the edge of the barrier between us and the targets.
"Good girl," Colton mutters against the side of my head, making my spine chill, and heat flushes to my cheeks and inner thighs. "So eager," he continues, his voice darker as he pulls me in against him so I feel his hardness against my backside. "I'm reassured you can defend yourself if you need to, now, little one."
"Good," I manage to whisper, already feeling like I don't ever want to pick up a gun again.
"She actually hit the target, Colt," someone says, and I realize Rina has gone up to look at the targets. "Some shots on the white, and one in the wall, but she'd do some damage. Nice work, girl."
"She's a natural," Dorian states from behind us, just as I close my eyes with relief. That means I don't have to do this all over again.
"And with a big, needy man clinging to her, no less," Callie comments.
Colton makes a sound that's dangerously close to a growl, before he takes a step back—away from me. "Watch your mouth, Callie, or—"
"Or what? You'll kill me?" She scoffs, and I see her flip her red hair as I turn around. "Please," she adds with a mock to her tone.
"I was gonna say I'll have Dorian assigned to you, as your PA. Indefinitely." Colton crosses his arms, and I see a hint of a very pleased smile on his lips.
Then I notice the nervous glance from Callie to Dorian as she growls, "You wouldn't dare."
"Hey!" Dorian appears between them with his arms flailing in the air, and I bite my lip to keep from laughing.
None of these three are particularly afraid of Colton, it seems, and they're all lovely people. At least, Dorian and Callie are. Rina I'm still deciding about; since she's the one closest to my mobster husband, she might not be far from his sanity level.
"Shut it, D." Callie sounds surprisingly terrifying as she glares towards us.
"This is...strange," I mutter, mostly to myself. Because it definitely is strange. These people are all criminals, or accomplices, or whatever it is they might be when they know and allow illegal activities to happen, and still they act like a somewhat normal group of friends.
"We're a charming, dysfunctional family," Callie comments, adding to my own thoughts.
"Don't say the F-word in front of the boss, babe," Rina says as she moves back from checking the targets. She has a teasing grin on, and her eyes move to Colton's when she adds, "He's a little sensitive about that."
"We're done here." Colton's arm comes around my back, and he quickly leans forward to pick up my empty gun, before he says, "Let's go, little one."
As I'm being pulled away, I hear chuckling and giggles, and when I look over my shoulder I catch Dorian giving me a signal to text him later. I nod, and I push a strand of my hair behind my ear as I look up at Colton's face. His expression is angry, but there's a glint of something else behind his dark eyes that makes me think he likes these interactions—even if he pretends to hate them.
