What If Mapleshade's Kit's Survived?

continuing from in the actual story of when mapleshade's kits are found limp on the river bank...

     A ghastly shriek split the air.  Mapleshade wondered where the noise was coming from until she realized her mouth was open and slammed her jaws shut.  She stepped towards her kits and lay down, pulling their limp bodies close.  Each one was soaked to the touch as well as cold like the icy river.  Mapleshade began to groom each kit and was filled with such joy, that surely a mother would know when she felt warmth return to each one.

     "Let's get them to riverclan camp," appledusk mewed, gently picking patchkit up by the scruff.  eeltail and splashfoot did the same with the other two kits, well mapleshade scrambled to her paws. as the group of cats headed to riverclan camp.  Mapleshade glanced at the river.  The black, icy waters moved as gently as a mothers tongue compared to the ferocious, merciless wave it had just swept along.  

     Mapleshade glared at the river, for moments before it had almost claimed the precious lives of her kits. -But it failed!- she thought fiercely, looking away from the river.

     When the patrol entered the camp, curious gazes seemed to scorch her pelt.  the riverclan warriors set the, now awake, kits on the ground and they scrambled to hide underneath their mother. 

     "What is this?" darkstar stepped forward until she was face to face with mapleshade.

     "Thunderclan cast me out" she hissed, looking at her kits, "I came in hopes that... that their father's clan would take them in." 

     "So.. their father is... riverclan?  wasn't birchface their father?" darkstar murmured. 

     Maple shade nodded and shot a quick glance to appledusk.  The riverclan warrior looked at his paws well reedshine gasped and gave him a hurt expression.

     "Appledusk. your the father, aren't you?"  both mapleshade and appledusk nodded.

     "And you want to join riverclan?" darkstar rumbled.

     "Yes," she mewed, looking Darkstar in the eyes.

     "Thunderclan has lost 4 great cats today," darkstar began, facing her clan, "but riverclan has gained them. Welcome to riverclan, mapleshade.  appledusk can help you get situated in the nursery with your kits."

     Mapleshade stiffles a snort of laughter as a suprised expresion flashed across his face.

     "Come on, mapleshade."  he mumered, leading the way to the nursery.

     When she had settled into a nest with her kits, apple dusk turned and left.  Mapleshade watched as her kits fell asleep, -this will be a better life for them- she let out a small sigh of relief.
