Grim reaper.
Angel of death.
Whatever you want to call them.
They are actually just employees just like any other office worker and what they are doing is just a simple job for them. As a punishment or a blessing was hard to decide. You might ask if they are immortal, they definitely are and they have the power to do many things.
Many things have changed in past centuries , the world wasn’t black and white anymore.
Human society has changed, so did the upper world.
Right now, there is no “War” between “Good and Evil”. No rivalry. Let’s say a civilized behaviour towards each other had been adapted.
Now all of them had their significant role to play, like a normal big society. Grim reapers, whose job was to collect dead souls and send them to door of judgment. Then there were angels, who checked human karmas and other deeds and put them on the list. The list which decided if someone would go to hell or heaven. Then they were taken to their decided destination.
Both hell and heaven have several steps to complete until a soul either gets their punishment or is blessed and reincarnated. This system would remind you of companies and their chain of order, in which grim reapers are the customer service. Their job is simply to collect and guide souls and every month they would get salary as though they were mortal.
They could actually get anything they desired without money but they still needed food and no one wants to live forever doing the same work for nothing. That would straight up be boring. So they get points and coins which they collect. They can use them to either get a promotion, be reincarnate as a human or they can revive their past human life memories.
Doesn’t it sound like a game where you can collect points and redeem your sins? The person who was in charge of creating this system actually loved gaming, that’s what Dahee once told Gaon when he learned about this weird system.
As all jobs they had rules and boundaries that need to be minded.
Gaon’s job also had rules and power boundaries,
One of the major rules is to not look at human eyes, when they are on the verge of dying because when Lucifer first came to the human world to collect souls, the desperation in human eyes was so strong it had forced him to feel sympathy and he let them live. This led to big chaos and eros himself had to come down and kill those sinners and ordered the lord of death not to look at human eyes.
And grim reapers were direct descendants of the god of death and possess that same weakness as him.
Still some Grim Reapers couldn’t stop themselves and they were forced to fulfil the wish of the dying, which in return earned them anger by their lord, who might take away the power of giving someone life, from them.
So even if a human asks for their own saving from them, they couldn’t give it to them but the death God is a simple person and no he is not as cruel as humans think he is.
So after a decade of debate between the God of Death and the God of life they were permitted to fulfil anything other than that
But that can also lead to chaos, which they will be held responsible for.
So right now the current in charge of Grim Reaper department just ordered them not look at the eyes to make things simple.
Another big rule is, that if you break the first rule you are not allowed to fulfil any extreme wishes which can lead to chaos in the human world and there are 20+ rules after this which Gaon doesn’t care to think of.
And you might ask yourself why the God of Death is so persistent to fulfil human wishes but that’s for another day not now. Right now the big problem is, that Gaon broke the first rule
And he noticed as time around him stopped when he looked at his partner / friend who had stiffened like a statue. But he could tell her eyes held worries for the coming future.
He turns his head looking at the human below him. The human had a very handsome face with doe eyes, pouty lips and sharp nose but right now it was all covered by ash and he was sickly pale from pain. His eyes are wide open and locked on two figurse laying beside Dahee .
Gaon doesn’t know the relationship between them but he can guess they are part of one family. Gaon opened his mouth “What?”
The man also opened his mouth and a thin voice made a way out of it, surprising the human as he didn’t expect he could speak.
“You are an angel right?” Ok, that’s a first. Anyone addressing him, mostly called him devil, Satan or grim reaper, maybe the man held a prominent view of religion.
“Yes” Gaon replied, sweat breaking out on his forehead. In his two decades of doing this job it’s the first time he encountered this kind of situation. He did hear a few times when grim reapers broke the rules and the results were not good. But right now, he was obliged to answer this human as God hated liars and no one is allowed to lie. That was also one of the rules by default from “Grim Reaper book of rules”.
“Can ----- You ---- save --- them please..” the man said his eyes desperately looking at him. His eyes like pool of sorrow and for the first time Gaon’s heart (Gaon is not sure if he has heart or not) ached, A foreign feeling spread all over his body.
He could not think, neither could he control himself from saying:
“Anything else” what the fuck. Gaon couldn’t believe his mouth. is this what his colleagues meant when they are put in front of the court and said that they could not stop themselves from fulfilling Human wishes?
The man below didn’t expect the answer, he thought this was angel of death when he didn't reply to him sooner and would laugh at him saying something cruel or just ignore him but this answer surprised him, that for a moment he forget his burning pain. He just wanted his daughter and brother to survive. He knows he can’t survive but if they survived he is sure those heartless people would try to harm them. So he did what the best he could do, his father always said he was pretty smart when it comes to taking rational decisions maybe he is right because the thing came out of his mouth was:
“Protect them” and after those two words left his mouth, Kang Isaac felt his eyes getting heavy and everything started to get blurry. He can’t keep his eyes open, they closed and in the last moment he prayed for his brother and daughter to have a long life.
Gaon was in daze. He couldn’t stop his mouth from saying: “OK”
And that’s it, the time ticked again, the fire which had frozen was raging again. His partner finally cocked her head at him now, not frozen by the twist of fate and Gaon's mind racing like a clock wheel. Without wasting time he took out a crystal ball and placed it in front of the man and the blue light of his soul entered the ball making it glow.
Gaon’s face was blank when he stood up and turned. He looked at two laying figure and then Dahee who was looking at him worriedly. He knew Dahee already guessed what he was going to do or she just wanted to give Gaon a few seconds to think.
He looked at the pair of humans he agreed to save an saw the light of their soul flickering and he understood that he had very little time to make his decision. The foreign feeling he felt still there.
Maybe he was destined to get punished, he did hear about those reapers who broken rule. They were sent to hell to scrape damage souls. Gaon could only hope that they allow him to take his books with him. Sighing he stretched his hand towards them and a glow of green light created a protective bubble around the two.
“Are you sure” Dahee asked. Surprisingly she was very quiet this whole time and it was definitely the longest pause he had seen her take before speaking.
He smiled at her and nodded, he will deal everything that happens later..
