"Mom, I'm not going on any of your blind dates no matter how perfect you describe the guy to be," Jennie said as she ruffled her hair in frustration due to her mother ranting about her never dating.
"Why not?! It would be a great chance to meet new people, and who knows, you might find your true love." The mother argued and shrugged her shoulders, secretly hoping for Jennie to agree just once.
"No. If it was true love, I would meet them naturally, not on some setup blind date." Her fingers held the fork with unexpected force and picked up a piece of broccoli before placing it in her mouth.
She was definitely at her limit.
"Besides, I want to get to know them first. Not just by the way you described them." Jennie's mom sighed in response. She knew no one, including her, can ever persuade this girl if she strongly agreed to something.
It was somewhat a good and bad thing.
As the two women were arguing, a sudden slam was heard from the side. "I don't care whoever you spend your life with, as long as it brings the company wealth, I'll accept it." Jennie's dad said as his jaw was clenched, clearly showing that he was upset by the conflict.
The slam left a little crack on the expensive dining table. His words sent waves to Jennie's heart, shattering it into pieces. Though she knew her father didn't care about her, these words still hurt.
Jennie knew from the day she was born that her father was this type of person. He didn't care about what she thought or how she feels because he was blinded by money and popularity. Growing up as a kid, Jennie always thought she only had one guardian, and it was only her mom.
Throughout her school years, Jennie never really made any friends. She attended a private school where there were only classes and after-school programs with no fun at all. In addition to all these hard private school classes, Jennie still had extra tutoring at home.
In hopes of being praised by her father, she always tried her best to manage these classes and get the highest scores. And yes, Jennie graduated top of her class and was accepted to one of the smartest colleges in the world. She thought that was enough to make her father proud for once, but obviously, that didn't work out.
"I'm full," Jennie said as she placed her fork lightly on the table and excused herself. Her eyes were filled with both fire and sadness from her father's reaction. Her mother kept quiet, munching up the leftover food to not cause any more conflict.
The father sighed angrily, losing his appetite to eat after Jennie left. Before he did anything else, his phone started to vibrate. He picked it out with one of his eyebrows lifting, not even bothering to look at the contact name, "Hello?"
There was a short pause before a voice was heard, "Hello, boss. I just wanted to inform you about a business party that you were recently invited to. You are allowed to bring as many people as you want, but it can not be more than five. It is hosted by your friend, Shin Hyun-Syeok."
Jennie's father groaned as he realizes his assistant finished talking. He massaged his temples, "Okay, I got it. Did you check my schedule to see if I can attend it?" There was some tapping on the other side of the screen before it settled down, "Yes, I just checked it and you are free for that day. The party takes place next week Friday, sir."
Right after that sentence, both of them exchanged goodbyes before ending the call. Jennie's father figured he had no one else he had to bring except for Jennie and her mother. "Cancel all your plans for next week Friday and tell Jennie to do that too. You guys better behave great and don't try to do some bullshit there," He said in a low voice.
Jennie's mom could only nod in response and went upstairs to tell Jennie about this party. Jennie stayed in her room, scrolling through her phone as she heard a knock on her door. "It's your mom, can I come in?" Jennie quickly opened her door, wondering if something was wrong.
Her mom came in and sat down next to Jennie. Jennie was about to ask if something happened, but her mom started speaking already, "You might want to get rid of all your plans next week on Friday. Your father was invited to this party and he's bringing both of us with him. There are going to be a lot of people in the business industry there so we need to be great."
Jennie rolled her eyes, "Do I have to go? I rather stay home and do absolutely nothing. These parties are always so boring, mom." The mother caressed her daughter's hand, "Come on, Jennie. It's just one party, maybe you'll meet some new friends. If not, it'll last not more than three hours." Jennie gave a slight grin, granting her mother's wishes with a nod.
"Anyways, I'm going out with my girls tomorrow to a bar, would that be okay?" Jennie asked with pleading eyes.
"Sure, honey."
Next day...
"You're getting forced to go to another stupid party? That sucks," Jisoo said out loud as she took a sip from her glass of wine. Jennie flatted her lips into a straight line, "Yes, unnie. And as much as I don't wanna go, I'm forced to."
The younger ones were too busy ordering dishes from the menu while Jennie was trying to complain about her life. They whispered to eat other, discussing which one to order before Jennie interrupted, "You know, going one day without food won't kill you guys."
Chaeyoung placed her hand up, "Sorry, Jennie unnie, but it does for me. This body of mine needs food." Both the older ones gave Chaeyoung a 'no shit' expression before taking another sip of their drinks.
Although it might seem like the girls don't care about each other, deep down they actually do. Jisoo, Jennie, Chaeyoung, and Lisa have been best friends for more than 4 years. They met each other at college, all with different fashion senses but still very smart all together.
Whenever one of them gets in trouble, they'll always protect each other. All of them came from rich families that own businesses and never have to worry about money. They were all invited to the same party, but of course, the three of them weren't forced to go like Jennie.
"Just make up an excuse and hope it will work this time," Lisa said. Jennie rolled her eyes, "Lisa, if having excuses worked, do you think I would be forced to attend the other parties in the past too?" Lisa nodded in agreement.
"Do you want us to come with you?"
Jennie's eyes widen, "Really?! You guys will do that for me?" Jisoo smiled at the reaction, "Well, at least I would," she glanced at the younger ones, "how about you guys?" Both Chaeyoung and Lisa looked at each other and shrugged their shoulders as one of them said, "Let's go together."
Jennie pouted and hugged all of them together, "You guys are the absolute best. With some company, I won't be that bored anyways." All of them laughed at Jennie's comment.
As they settled down, Jennie was lost in deep thought. She looked at her friends, being grateful that they were present in her life. Even though sometimes these girls can annoy her, Jennie still loved them.
If you asked her to choose her father or these 3 girls, Jennie would definitely choose her friends.
Lisa aggressively placed her bottle of soju on the coffee table, "Jennie unnie, you better pay for the drinks today."
"No problem, lalisa."
