Since 1990, scheduled and organized secessionist terrorism has dehumanised Kashmir, the valley of tranquillity and exquisite beauty. Methodical endeavours have been made to obliterate its syncretic culture, customs, and legacy, by an orgy of irrational brutality fueled by religious fanaticism and extremism, obliged and abetted from across India's borders.
Terrorism, whatever may be its garb, eventually knows no devotion nor religion and is undiscerning, notably when it is used as a means to achieve the ends of an external force.
The terrorists have executed monstrosities on women and children indiscriminately and wantonly. As the details illustrated in these pages will show the majority of the women who have been abducted, tortured, raped or killed.
Every such act has its own tale of barbarity, crudity and sheer horror. The pattern, however, is invariant ..... kidnap a woman, and kill her after outraging her modesty. Or, rape and kill her in her own house in the presence of her family members, and then kill them all. Or, just kill indiscriminately.
Often, the justification for such acts is apprehension about 'loyalty to the cause' on the part of the victim or the family, or to strike terror. Frequently, it is a manifestation of the psyche of those who have crossed the threshold of the law and all norms of civilized behaviour.
