Harry had to admit, he had a newfound obsession with the library. Any topic that he wanted to know more about, whether it be part of his self improvement quest, or just struggling with homework, he could guarantee there would be at least one book that could help him out. It irked him slightly that he had never appreciated this wonderful resource previously, but he put that down to a mix of his own laziness and naïvety coupled with wanting to go along with whatever Ron did, which definitely did not include books. He did also suppose it came from his early years with the Dursley's, who would punish him if he ever gave the slightest inclination for anything academic, outside Dudley's homework, which included libraries.
Today's quest was to see if he could fix his eyes, or at least get rid of his awful glasses. Not only did they break all the time, but Harry found they went a long way to making him look like his father, without the glasses and with his newly long hair, thanks to the hair growth potion he had learnt during fourth year, he looked much more like his mother, which while not being 'Harry', it was definitely better in his opinion. He sporadically tried minor glamours, slightly changing the shape of his jaw or his nose, but as of yet he had not found a form that felt sufficiently 'Harry'.
It wasn't long before he was sat in a study alcove with a copy of The Healers Guide to Tinctures open on the desk in front of him. There were several options in the book, many far beyond his basic skill-set, however one potion caught his eye. The potion in question didn't seem to fix his eyes, but instead worked like magical contact lenses. He would need to place three drops in each eye once a day, and it would adjust his vision so he did not need to rely on the broken metal frames. A bonus, the ingredients were also all in his standard potions kit, although he would have to order replacement ingredients if he didn't want to run out before the end of term. He was glad Hermione had shown him the specifics of owl ordering, it seemed to be saving him a lot lately.
The next question was where to brew, the potion called for an eight-hour simmering step as well as an overnight cooling step at the end. He grinned as he remembered their second year and Hermione's incredible brewing of the Polyjuice potion. He had avoided the bathroom since second year, the memories of the chamber, not to mention the slightly infatuated ghost, made it a less than desirable location. That wasn't even counting the fact it was a girls bathroom.
He already got enough strange looks and comments without being caught hanging around a girls bathroom.
Harry briefly considered asking Snape for use of one of the practice labs set aside for OWL and NEWT students, but the idea of approaching the professor was too much even for his supposed Gryffindor bravery. He thought about sneaking in and using the rooms in secret, but the thought of what would happen when he was inevitably caught stopped further thoughts on that subject. Shaking his head he made his way up to the great hall.
Giant pumpkins floated through the air, accompanying the usual candles and bats. The tables were adorned with every sweet treat imaginable. Taking his seat, Harry was keeping his fingers crossed that Halloween would pass with little trouble. He had grown used to some sort of disaster happening on the anniversary of his parents death, and was looking forward to an evening of quiet solitude and reflection for a change. Not that he was feeling particularly generous towards his parents this year.
Ron had sat across from him as if nothing had happened between them, chatting about the terrible plays the Chudley Cannons keeper had made during their last match and Harry appreciating the normalcy of the situation. Though he was dedicated to the changes he was making, Harry found that he had been missing the easy friendship he had with the redhead. Even if he could no longer condone Ron's attitude to school and life in general, he was hoping that they could remain on good terms.
