It's the first period at Grace Field High. Ray was sat in his chair near the back. Rather than listening to the teacher talk, he was reading. He didn't care for school, he felt like he already knew everything. He held his head up with his hand on his cheek. The book was opened on the desk.
"Ray, are you paying attention?" The teacher asked. Ray looked up at her. She seem agitated, her arms were crossed, and her eyes were narrowed. "Yes," he replied. She stared at him. "Okay then Answer this question," she said. The whole class was now looking at him. She went up to the chalkboard and wrote an equation. |4 - 8(3 - 12)| - |5 - 11| =? Ray looked at it for a second. "70." He said.
She looked at him, then back at the board. She began to solve the equation. It took her a few minutes but when she finally solved it she got 70. She sighed. "What else should I expect from the top of this class." She said. She went back to teaching and he went back to reading.
The bell rang, and Ray gathered his things. He went to his next class and sat down. His seat was on the very left near a window. He opened his book and read while he waited for the bell. Then suddenly someone stole his book. He looked up to see his best friend Norman, looking at the book. He had hair like snow, and bright blue eyes.
"Norman, give it back," Ray said. "Nope!" Norman waved the book in the air. Ray groaned and stood up. "Give it back shit head." He said. Norman looked at him smirking. "Come and get it," He said. Ray rolled his eyes. "You are so immature." He said. Norman just chuckled. "You're just mad 'cause you're short," Norman said. "I'm not short!" He reached up for the book. "Your struggle says differently." Norman laughed. "I am the average height! You're just tall!" Ray jumped up and finally got the book. "You're an idiot." He said. Norman leaned in close to Ray. "But I'm your idiot." He replied.
Ray's face turned red and he pushed Norman away. "Don't say such stupid things!" Ray said. Norman just laughed, and Ray sat back down in his seat. "Aww come on Ray, don't pout!" Norman said. "Shut up." He replied. The bell rang and Norman sat in his seat behind Ray. The teacher tapped the boared then started her lesson plan. "Psst! Ray!" Norman whispered kicking Ray's chair. "Raaay!" He whispered. "What!" Ray whispered back. "Turn around," he answered. Ray turned around and Norman passed him a note.
Ray opened the note. In Norman's hand writing it said, "I'm sorry my love" with a heart at the bottom. Ray blushed. Norman often joked about things like this. Ray looked back to see Norman giving him puppy dog eyes. Ray smiled and shook his head turning back around.
"Emma could you come up to the board and show us what is wrong with this sentence?" The teacher said. Ray looked up and furrowed his brow. He had only one thing against her, the fact she was Norman's crush. She's a beautiful, sweet and intelligent girl. Which made it even harder to dislike her, but he did.
After class Ray got up and stood next to Norman's desk. They always walked together to their next class. Ray looked at his desk. There was a drawing of Emma. "This is good..." Ray said pointing at the drawing. Norman's cheeks flushed. He grabbed the drawing. "Thanks I guess," Norman said, slightly embarrassed. Ray punched his arm playfully. "You don't gotta be embarrassed man," he teased. "I-I'm not embarrassed!" Norman replied. "You should give that to her," Ray said. "No way! I could never give it to her!" He said.
"Give what to me?" Emma was behind Norman, who almost fell out of his chair. "O-oh! It's nothing Emma!" Norman said, his face burning. "Are you sure?" She asked. "He made a drawing of you in class," Ray said, smiling through the pain. She looked at Norman, who glared at Ray. "Can I see it?" She asked. Norman sighed and gave the drawing to her. "Oh my God!! This is amazing!" She said smiling at him. Norman rubbed his neck blushing. "Thanks."
Ray looked at them talking. They looked perfect together. It hurt him. Ray had liked Norman ever since the 6th grade. He had known Norman since the third grade. He never said anything, afraid it would ruin their friendship. They eventually said bye to Emma and walked to their class.
"You really like her, huh?" Ray said. "Yeah.." He smiled to himself. Ray walked looking at his feet. "I think I'm gonna confess, will you help me?" Norman asked. Ray looked up at him. He wanted to say "No!" He wanted to say how much he loved him, how he's loved him for years. "I— uh yeah! Of course.." He said. Norman was his best friend, all Ray wanted was for him to be happy. "Thank you Ray! You're the best!" Norman said pulling Ray into a hug. Ray rested his head on Norman's shoulder. Norman pulled away from Ray. They walked in silence to their next class.
