Your back story can be whatever you want it to be, I completely made a new family and things for mine so I won't be using it as an example but I'll use another one instead - you can layout/write your back story however you like, I personally like using a more story based way to describe my back story - this back story is from my first ever script which was a golden trio era DR so it has nothing to do with my marauders script! (your back story and be as small or as much as you'd like it to be). You can also make a family tree to go into more details if you like!
When Voldemort killed my parents, Dumbledore made the decision to split me and Harry up, one would stay in the wizarding world and be brought up with magic and the other would be brought up in the muggle world which means they'd only find out about magic and Hogwarts when they receive their Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry letter. Dumbledore decided because Voldemort only wanted to kill Harry (the prophecy only stated Harry would kill Voldemort not me, Voldemort didn't know i existed until he got inside the house) Harry should go into the muggle world where no one knew him and no one could try and kill him again which meant i stayed in the wizarding world and while Dumbledore and Mirerva McGonagall tried to track down living relatives in the muggle world for Harry, Severus Snape volunteered to take care of me until they found me my "forever" home but after weeks of Dumbledore and Miereva searching they couldn't find me anywhere to stay permanently so Snape offered to keep me as his own, so Dumbledore, Mirerva, Hagrid and Snape made a deal stating that no one would know im Lily & James Potters daughter and that I'd be raised as Snape's daughter
