Kanan's POV
I felt my heart drop in my chest as Ezra unconsciously fell from the Ghost, so I was relieved that he was okay.
Ezra said he used the force, which I of course was overjoyed with. Ezra was learning, and that's all I wanted.
But I felt a disturbance in the Force. I thought it was just my head, but inept feeling it. It was like a bug flying at my brain that I would temporarily forget about before it buzzes and sends me into worry.
One night I woke up not being able to sleep. I got up to get a drink when I heard the shuffling of feet and a small clicking of an opening door.
I poked my head into the hallway and saw a small door that led out of the Ghost quietly close.
I opened it again and looked out. It was Ezra and he was running out on the fields of Lothal. I was curious, but I didn't follow in fear of him changing plans because I tagged along.
As the weeks went by, I investigated. Ezra left at night on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I was worried about him.
I told Hera but all she said was that he needed some nights alone and away from the Ghost. I decided to ignore his disappearances because I found clarity in Hera's logic.
----TIME PASSES----
"Okay, so are we all clear on what we're getting?" I asked for about the millionth time.
"Yes Kanan. It isn't THAT important anyway." Ezra pointed out.
"Yes it is!"
"Kanan, it's a grocery run." Hera reasoned.
"In the city known for being crawling with imperials." I didn't want anybody hurt on my team.
They all found logic in that so we set off.
In the city I was asking around the bustling streets for fuel and food. Seeing the imperials stare at people filled me with a sense of unease.
"Spector 1 reporting to all specters. Reply if you have the materials."
"Spector 2 ready."
"Spector 3 is ready."
"Spector 4 ready."
"All ready on Spector 5."
Then there was a silence and through the com Hera said "Spector 6?" But there was no reply.
"Hold on." Sabine said coming up behind me with Zeb. Hera was running towards us with Chopper.
"Where's the kid?" Zeb asked.
"I'll set our frequency to only hear his com." Sabine said and tampered with her com. "There." We all huddled around it and were terrified at what we heard.
There was the low growling of a large dog-like creature coming from the com. Then we heard Ezra shouting "NO!" From a bit of a distance. He must have dropped his com and then buzzing sounds floated through as his com was no longer operational.
"We have to see if Ezra's alright!" Hera panicked. My face turned white with fear as we ran across the town street.
EZRA'S POV
"NO!" I shouted as a large firewolf attacked me and we fell to the ground. I heard a soft CRUNCH sound, the com was crushed.
I looked up at the firewolf and laughed as she playfully swatted my head.
I mockingly commented on the play fight. "A firewolf and human, enemies forever! Battling to the death!" The firewolf flopped down on me and I let out a puff of air with the impact.
The firewolf smiled. "I win every time Bridger!" She teased. I smiled knowing what I had with this firewolf was more than anyone ever had with a firewolf before.
FLASHBACK
I was scared and crying as a huge cobra reared its ugly head to strike at me, 3 year old Ezra. I was so little that the fear paralyzed me.
Then out of nowhere a giant golden furred firewolf jumped out and tackled the evil snake, killing it in one swat.
"Are you okay little one?" The young firewolf asked. I gasped.
"You can talk?"
"Of course. We aren't supposed to talk to humans but I don't care. I ran from my pack. Did you do the same?" She inquired seeing as I was out here alone.
"N-no I just left for a little while f-for a walk." The little me stuttered.
"I think we are about the same age. I'm still a pup, and so are you!" She smiled. I smiled in return.
"I'm Ezra." I held out my hand and stroked her head. She leaned into my hand.
"I'm Amity." The firewolf said. "We should be friends!"
"Yeah!"
"Don't tell your parents though. This is our secret that firewolves can talk."
"I promise."
BACK TO PRESENT DAY
For twelve years we have still been friends. As I was about to get up from under Amity, I heard gasps of shock and fear.
I managed to turn my head and see Kanan and the crew in a defensive pose.
"Kill that firewolf!" Kanan shouted.
"We'll get you out Ezra!" Sabine said as they started to charge for Amity.
"WAIT!" I shouted and they froze a foot away from us. "I can get out myself." I wriggled out and she grabbed the back of my collar with her teeth and propped me up.
"No need for killing!" She added quickly. The entire Ghost crew's jaws dropped.
"It can talk? Firewolves can't talk!" Hera was puzzled.
"I'm not an it I'm a she." Amity pointed out.
"Look, firewolves can talk, they just aren't supposed to In front of humans." I sighed.
"Guys, meet Amity. Amity meet my friends." Amity gave off a low grunt, still not trusting them.
Kanan looked utterly confused. "I guess we are just glad to see that you're okay Ezra. We didn't expect to see a talking wolf." I shrugged exchanging a glance with Amity.
"I've known Amity forever, she won't hurt anyone. In fact..." I sighed.
"What?" Hera asked impatiently.
"I've been sneaking off at night to hang out with her. We're childhood friends, even if she is an animal." At that I saw Kanan's face lift.
"THATS where you've been sneaking off to at night." My face fell.
"You knew?"
"Not until a few weeks ago. You know what, why doesn't she just stay with us?" Everyone looked at Kanan like he was crazy.
"If Ezra trusts Amity, the. So do I." The other murmured agreement.
Amity roared into the sky in happiness.
